the magician teller changed his name to just plain Teller. got nothing against family but i don't really care for it. i am my own identity

In modern times, they do have very little use besidess to give you a family identifier, if given the surname. in oldem times your surname was usually a sign of heirtage weather it be a profession, sign of royality or Land of Origin(like ezio). Sometimes two of those mixed together (King Hyrule).
