This is a "rental" rating for me. It is perfect for a "Saturday movie night" with friends, snacks, and a case of booze.
Well actually, it kinda does. Perhaps I could've liked this more if some of the trailers played up the comedic aspects of the film. But again, the way this film was marketed made it seem like a straight-forward horror film, and not a tongue-n-cheek shot at home invasion thrillers. Ultimately, I agree with things that everyone in the crew had to say; it was a fun film with plenty of good moments (some of which were pretty funny), but they were balanced out with scenes with bad writing or acting that, even in a comedy, I wouldn't find funny. It didn't pull me into it's world enough to make me forgive it's flaws and it could've helped me more if all the marketing for it didn't peg it as a straight-forward horror flick.
Besides, if I remember correctly, I think the crew has criticized a few films in the past for it's marketing; "Adjustment Bureau" is the one off the top of my head.
I was in Cyrus's camp while my gf was in Leon's. I thought it was great fun and Sharni Vinson was gorgeous.
Doesn't matter how it was marketed. Studios would just confuse audiences by marketing it as a horror with some comedy. So they just went straight for it as a horror movie. This movie definitely had comedy beats aside from some of the poor acting.
@VoiceoftheBoa, yea...watched it a second time this morning. I think some of the comedy was intentional, but a lot of the parts I found funny, seem to be just bad acting lol.
@josh I'm still questioning whether or not this was made to be a comedy, 'cause it certainly wasn't marketed as a comedy. Even if it is though, it still wouldn't excuse some of the flaws in here.
@VoiceoftheBoa, it's hard to compare this movie to The Conjuring. Only because I saw this movie as more a comedy and throwback to Scream in a way. I don't know if it was meant to be scary or not, but you're right about the bad acting. However, I thought the bad acting is part of what made this movie funny.
I'm a little disappointed by this movie. It has a number of creepy moments in it, and some of the scares did work. But in between those scenes, there's a lot of scenes with either bad writing or acting, and it kept throwing me off because on one hand, those masked guys were actually kinda menacing. But then you'll scenes were these actors either give a terrible delivery or the dialogue is bad, and it became a bit distracting. I almost wished there was more action in the attack scenes so that some of this dialogue could've been cut.
I have mixed feelings about it, so much so that my rating is teetering. It's going back and forth between a high rental & a low matinee, but overall, I agree that this was overhyped by the film festival people. And for me "The Conjuring" is still the scariest film I've seen this year.
