OK Children, settle down. Let Cranky Old Dude tell you how this one will go down. Hollywood will go down on this idea like a cheap hooker on Hollywood ave. Here is why:
For the record, I know a few things about this game. I have 2 sons, 32 and 20 who love the game. They are on (my) computer 24/7 if given a chance. They have multiple avatars, go on raids, belong to guilds argue and trade goods with others using VOIP. In short, they don't have much of a life. But hey, they don't drink, do drugs or otherwise engage in criminal activity. This is a safe addiction and they leave me the F*** alone.
Yeah, WOW has millions of people sign up. yeah not all of them play. Who cares. Look a lot of kids get their first WOW demo card, get on and get hooked. It is like crack. People stay up all night on this shit. But the catch is the monthly payments. Most kids don't have a credit card so it is on Mommie or daddies card right? grades go down, kid cops an attitude and boom. Parents pull the plug.GAMEOUS INTERUPTUS! Account is closed. Some kids try working. Takes a lot of lawns to be able to afford the monthly rate. 30 bucks if you buy the 2 month card right? The trouble with working be it burgers or mowing lawns, Work gets in the way of game play.
The point it, there are millions into in. Full time, part time, even those who get cut off. The game is become part of our culture now. It is parodied in Sit-Coms (South park), Commericals (Toyota Trucks and my Favorite, the One with Ozzie "The F'n Prince of Darkness"). Hit movies (See what the geek Columbus was playing in Zombie Land? Not resident Evil!). The game was popular before MMOs and has gotten bigger and badder.
Nope, True Belivers, Hollywood gets a case of Movie makin Blue Balls over something like this. Built in base audience, strong name recognition, chance to show off special effects muscles and built in marketing with a strong base already. it does not get any better than that. Toss in a name director with a love for walking on the dark side and a known track record with CGI movies. Shit. This has mega hit written all over it. It could be a real stinker and still clean up $$$. (Think Transformers 2) Remember all of those kids out there that don't get to play, they will want their crack fix from the flick.
The way to do the flick would be with actors in Motion Capture / CGI (Think Bewoulf). The old "kid gets sucked into the game" story line? Hopefully not a chance in hell. What they could/should do is work with Blizzard and tie the movie to a game expansion. Now that would be kick ass. The games never really had much of a solid story line. Just an outline more than anything else. That will give Sam R a chance to make the movie breath a bit. Come on, somebody out there name one charater from the game who needs to be in the movie. AND NOT YOUR OWN DAMN AVATAR! I would like a dark anti-hero so lets go for "The Litch King" what the hell. He is as good as anything else. One thing I hope they keep in the movie: Sight Gags. There are always silly, goofy (and sometimes a little blue) gags and jokes around the corner, a drunk in a tavern, and angry chicken that kicks butt, a twisted holiday theme. That is something that makes the game so endering and popular.
One wish: When the Blue Ray comes out. The movie will have the option to make choices along the way and alter the storyline. Now that would be fun and in keeping with the spirit of the game.
So hang in there. it will be a couple of years at least before they get this thing done, more than enough time for BLIZZARD to come up with an Expansion to match.
Oh yes, one more thing. I would lay $$$ that it will be done in 3D. James Cameron AVATAR quality 3D. For the movies and for the games and for the home video
