If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans have had little to sing about over the last several months. The upcoming Michael Bay-produced reboot, which will be directed by Jonathan Liebesman, has made several moves that haven't exactly catered to the fanbase. There was the famous discussion of new alien origins for the turtles, then came Bay's sneering at negative fan reaction to that not-so-slight narrative change, and then of course there was the casting of Megan Fox as April O'Neil. The whole thing has been so mishandled that it's almost comical. It is therefore fitting that the first piece of decent news to come out of this production is that comedian Will Arnett has signed on. He is said to be one of the male leads, though sources say he will not be playing Casey Jones. In addition to earning a great deal of popularity as Gob Bluth on the TV series 'Arrested Development' and as Devon Banks on '30 Rock', he has also appeared in films such as 'Blades of Glory' and 'Monsters vs. Aliens,' in which he voiced The Missing Link. 'Ninja Turtles,' as it is now called, will hit theaters June 6th, 2014.
Even the best piece of news so far on this project, as far as I'm concerned, carries with it instant disappointment. Let's consider each of the roles that could be considered the "male lead" in a 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle' adaptation. We've got Shredder, Splinter, and Casey Jones. Of those three, am I the only who thinks Arnett would have made an outstanding Casey Jones? Sure, he's a comedian and not known for action-heavy performances, but he's also wonderfully snide and often brings a humorously absurd amount of intensity to his characters that would need just the slightest tweak to work perfectly for Jones. If nothing else, I feel Casey Jones would have been less of a stretch for Arnett than would be his voicing Splinter. This leaves us with basically only one option: Shredder. Last week, when it was announced that four young, largely untested actors had been cast as the titular reptilian martial artists, the studio specifically mentioned that they were very close to casting the villainous Shredder. Suddenly Arnett signs on in an as-yet-unnamed male lead who is definitely not Casey Jones? My guess is he'll be fitted for spiked armor any day now. If that is the case, I think it's another piece of miscasting for 'Ninja Turtles.'
What do you guys think? How do you feel about Arnett coming aboard? Do you think he'll play Shredder? Do you agree he would've made a good Casey Jones?
