If it's crap ... We'll tell you
In mere days, Marvel will kick off Phase 2 with the release of Shane Black's 'Iron Man 3.' From there, Thor and Captain America will get sequels and The Guardians of the Galaxy and even possibly Ant-Man will get their first cinematic adaptation within this phase. Phase 2 will be capped by Joss Whedon's 'The Avengers 2.' Details leak here and there about the films leading up to 'The Avengers' sequel, but, given that it won't be released until 2015, we've heard understandably little about the Phase 2 finale. But during a recent interview, Whedon talked about the completed first draft of the script. More specifically, he hinted at a couple of characters from 'Avengers' canon who may be appearing in the sequel.
"I've got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act. They're in the movie."
Hmm, a brother and sister team from the 'Avengers' universe? Really sounds like he's talking about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. There are some extremely ancillary characters I suppose he could be referring to, but Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are the bro/sis combo most directly connected to the team; being second generation Avengers. Also, we already know that Marvel and Fox share the rights on these two characters. Marvel is able to use them for 'The Avengers' as long as they don't mention their Magneto-centric X-Men past, and Fox can use them as long as they don't mention 'The Avengers.' I am really interested to see what Whedon is able to do with these characters, but he also has a major challenge in front of him. Coming up with a backstory for these two that makes no mention of their parentage or time in The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants will not be easy. If Marvel really wants to create one enormous all-encompassing film universe, eventually they are going to have snag the complete rights to those few characters who currently reside with other studios. Not seeing that happening any time soon.
What do you guys think? Do you agree Whedon is probably referring to Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch? How do you think their origin might be handled given the rights situation.
