As many of you know the technology we have in the film industry today is far superior to anything we have had in the past. No shit, Sherlock! But this has become a major disadvantage for the movies. So many movies focus on movies looking great, and don't have a problem with that. I have a problem with movies being injected with nothing but explosions, robots, pointless effects, etc. Some modern movies just simply throw the story out the window. Because of this movies nowadays lack. Big time.

Now not all movies are like that. Take Star Trek for example, that movie had absolutely breathtaking visuals along with great directing, great characters, and a great story. But you take a movie like Transformers 2 (which was the worst movie of the year so far this year in my opinion) has great visuals. The special effects in Transformers were very well done, and I have to give it to the people that made them. But the movie had no plot, no good characterization (which is not really needed in all movies), and awful acting.

I say this and completely understand that movies have been awful since the dawn of the motion picture. It just seems to me that these crap films are coming along more and more often. For me it has gotten to the point where I hate to go see a movie that looks action packed with good special effects. I also think that it has gotten to the point where people pirate movies because they know that the movie is going to be complete shit.

I just wish that I could look forward to a movie with good special effects because special effects are very important. Special effects keep us believing in the world that we see. Bad special effects can take you out of a movie completely. I wish more well rounded movies like Star Trek would come out which everything about the movie is great (but not necessarily oscar worthy).

Please comment below your opinions of modern movies or anything that you feel about this topic.

The problem with movies is the essential problem with the film industry (or any industry for that matter) - it's all about profit. Films don't get made to inspire people, or to tell a great story, or to shine light on the foibles of human existence anymore... films get made to make money.

I'm of the school of thought that if you make a brilliant film with a great story, it will succeed at the box office. However, time and time again I have been proven wrong. Star Trek (to use your example) was a GREAT movie, and it couldn't even break 77 million the first weekend. On the flip side - X-Men Origins: Wolverine (which I consider one of the worst comic book movies to date) was a terrible movie and it made over 90 million without breaking a sweat it's opening weekend.

Then, you have a cost/profit situation where you get films like Ghost Rider. Ghost Rider didn't cost that much to make, but brought in a reasonable profit for the studio, hence the upcoming suck-quel. Movie studios are always looking for the next big payday. Why spend money on an original film by some unknown director, when you can buy a property that people already know (like an old movie, TV series, comic book, etc), stock it with a big name or two, and then watch the money flow in?

I wish, I really really wish that more movies got made because of their story, but unfortunately it seems like we're doomed to watch sequel after trilogy after remake after reimagining after reboot while the studios try to figure out how to bilk us out of our hard earned money for the least amount of work.
