Ti West To Adapt Ben H. Winter's 'Bedbugs' For The Screen

Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite...or else. The bedbug infestation of major cities, like New York for example, was all over the news for a while; long enough to inspire horror author Ben H. Winters to pen his novel 'Bedbugs.' The story revolves around a family who moves into a new home and are immediately confronted with bizarre happenings. The matriarch of the family is suffering what she suspects are bedbug bites until she realizes she's the only one in the house getting bit. Is something more sinister going on? The novel was a best-seller and now it seems fledgling production company Tango Pictures has acquired the film rights. They've tasked up-and-coming horror luminary Ti West ('The House of the Devil,' 'The Innkeepers') with writing the screenplay. No word yet on when production is slated to begin.

This is really exciting news on a number of levels. First, though I haven't read Winter's novel (mind you I now very much intend to), I love horror stories bred of actual current events; horror as a genre is one of the most interesting ways in which society deals with its collective fears. Plus, as someone who has an irrational fear of hotel beds, this sounds like my ultimate nightmare fuel. Also, Ti West is one of those young guys making consistently fascinating horror films and I'm pumped to see what he can do with the material here. Although I'm sorry that he isn't also attached to direct, as a writer this concept sounds right up his alley. In fact, the creative director of Quirk, the company that published 'Bedbugs,'offered this...

"Reading Bedbugs as a manuscript felt like the literary equivalent of a Ti West horror movie—a slow-burning supernatural story with fully realized characters, light on gore but heavy on menace and dread.”

What do you guys think? Are you interested in 'Bedbugs' as a horror concept? What do you think of Ti West writing the screenplay?

Steps to living through the entirety of this movie**

1) Haul that nasty ass mattress into the back yard

2) Douse the mattress with lighter fluid

3) Turn around

4) Light a match and throw it over your shoulder while saying something corny and witty such as “Pray for a wet dream” or “I love the smell of lighter fluid, my old nasty ass futon, and roasted bed bugs in the morning!”

5) Walk slowly away from the flames while sliding on a pair of name brand shades.

6) Bug bomb the bedroom

7) Live in boring old safety for the rest of the movie.

** these steps won’t save you if you are,

A)     the only black cast member

B)      you get your tits out at some point during the movie
