Director Patty Jenkins ('Monster') has thrown down the hammer and departed 'Thor 2.' The prevailing explanation at the moment is that Jenkins left over creative differences. Marvel is now in a flurry to find a new director in order that they avoid missing their projected November 2013 release date. Sources for this story seem to think Jenkins may still direct a superhero movie, just not this one and perhaps not a sequel. 'Thor 2' will see Chris Hemsworth return to the titular Norse god role with the script being penned by 'Thor' co-writer Don Payne. In addition to helping Charlize Theron win an Oscar for 'Monster,' Jenkins also directed the pilot episode of AMC's 'The Killing.'

As much as I think 'Thor' is one of the few Marvel superhero films that doesn't automatically warrant a sequel, I was looking forward to see Jenkins' take on the character and the blooming franchise. Marvel has had very few female directors translate their canon of heroes to the screen. In fact, Lexi Alexander's 'Punisher: War Zone' is the only one I can think of offhand. Please feel free to enlighten me if there are any that I am omitting. My only concern now is that the film will now be a rush job and one for which the studio will grab any available, barely competent stooge to take over. I could easily be wrong of course, but we've seen this kind of thing happen before. In any event, we will be getting more Thor in next year's 'The Avengers,'hitting theaters May 4, 2012.

What do you guys think? Who should direct 'Thor 2' now?

If we need Thor why not just crowbar him into a some other movie showcasing a hero an avenger that hasn't been in a movie? I would like to see other heroes get their shot in the spotlight.

I agree completely with that!  Of course, greed and fanboy demand will win out.  So I'm not surprised they'll make more.  Hopefully, they'll keep it more serious and not concern themselves with Thor's love life....other than Sif, that is.
