You may remember that earlier this year it was announced that MGM and Screen Gems were planning to remake Brian De Palma's 1976 horror classic 'Carrie,' based on the novel by Stephen King. As was reported, 'Boys Don't Cry' director Kimberly Peirce will helm the remake. Several pieces in fact were in place, but one big question mark remained: who would play the tortured, telekinetic heroine? While the question has not yet been definitively answered, it seems the field of viable applicants has been narrowed to two: Chloe Moretz ('Kick-Ass,' 'Let Me In') and Haley Bennett ('Marley & Me'). Over the last few months, the prospects have included Dakota Fanning, Emily Browning ('Sucker Punch'), and Lily Collins ('Mirror, Mirror'). Rumor has it that MGM has also approached Jodie Foster to play Carrie's fanatically religious mother (played in the original by Piper Laurie).
This is a critical stage in the production of this remake. 'Carrie' is a horror movie requiring of an incredibly strong actress, and it will absolutely sink the remake to flub the casting of the lead. I'm unfortunately unfamiliar with Bennett, but it does speak highly of her that Terrence Malick ('The Thin Red Line,' 'Tree of Life') has cast her alongside Ryan Gosling and Natalie Portman in his upcoming film 'Lawless.' I like the idea of Moretz for the part, if only because she's proven time and time again to be a fantastic young actress. Her turn in 'Let Me In' not only showcased her acting prowess but also proved her ability to carry a horror film. Moretz is also considerably younger than Bennett, though Sissy Spacek was nearly thirty when she took on the role in the original film so the importance of the actress' age is debatable. As to the mother character, I'd be interested to see what Foster did with the part, but I'm having trouble seeing her in it.
What do you guys think? Which of these young actresses would be your pick for Carrie? Do you like Foster for the looney mom?

Comment by Lucia Dodaro on March 28, 2012 at 1:42pm They already made a remake in 2002. I think they should just give up on remakes, especialy if they already did a remake.
Comment by Richard Dempsey on March 27, 2012 at 6:37pm Go Chloe! She is not only a future oscar winner, but also scary as hell. She was cute and creepy in Let Me In, so she can do horror movies. She was sinister on 30 Rock and is as mature as Juno, plus she can look like a nerd when she needs to.
Comment by Daniel Truong on March 27, 2012 at 12:31pm Go Chloe! I loved her in 'Let Me In'

Comment by Lord of The Hills a.k.a LOTH on March 27, 2012 at 12:04am I think Hayle Bennett is the better pick. Chloe Moretz looks a little too young to me.
Comment by Jordan Hoffman on March 26, 2012 at 11:37pm And here we go...
"OOOH! Hitgirl is going to be in it!!? I LOVED her completely ordinary and not the least bit intriguing performance! Sign me up!"
Comment by The Dork Knight on March 26, 2012 at 9:37pm This is one remake I'll probably end up seeing because it is atleast based on a novel (so they can use that as an excuse), and because so far its excellent director and casting decisions (and I'm a huge fan of Chloe Moretz, she is constantly proving how well she can carry a film).
Still though, I can't say enough how sick of remakes I am...like REALLY REALLY REALLY sick. It crossed the line when TWICE last year...as in two totally separate weekends, had TWO remakes in the same weekend. OH...let me be more specific, EACH remake was from THE 80's (I'm not even gonna mention the movies since its either obvious...or not even worth listing them since they all sucked...except maybe Fright Night, that was KINDA fun actually)...
In August...2 (80's remakes) in one weekend. In October...2 (80's remakes) in one weekend.
That's when I had to say "yup...I give up...fuck remakes, sure they aren't all bad...but fuck em".
Lately, I've felt that way with remakes AND sequels..because (including this weekend) we have sequels to AWFUL movies lol. Oh hey that movie sucked ass!!!! yea but it made a lot of $$$ SEQUEL, SEQUEL, SEQUEL.
There's one sequel I'm looking forward to..yes obviously The Dark Knight Rises...not only because it is guaranteed to be good quality, but they even have the respect of ENDING the trilogy. Nolan must have been like "look, we all know how much money we make off Batman...we know we could make several more and still break box office records everytime...BUT...we are about quality over quantity...so its time that we make THE FIRST BATMAN TRILOGY. It started on a high note, it ends on an even higher note. 3 EXCELLENT films that will live on for generations, that....is good enough for me" I praise him for that. I really do.
Sure Tim Burton, you made an excellent Batman film, and a pretty decent follow-up (atleast as a kid I thought so), but he pretty much left it open like "meh...what the hell" NOPE that aint no Batman saga, sorry...that is just one good movie, a 2nd pretty good movie...and then letting a bunch of directors / actors continue it and go ape-shit crazy on the legend himself :( poor Batman was raped by Hollywood far too long until a unique, and original director came along and put Hollywood in it's place.
(YEA, all that because remakes reminded me of how much I hate sequels lately...then to how much I appreciate Christopher Nolan for having the balls and artistic vision to END a saga...not just 'see what happens').
OH YEA...so about Carrie...sure I'll see it, based on a novel, liked the old film (not that random come-and-go remake that came out years ago). I'll give this remake a chance...but its still considered a 'remake' so..FUCK IT lol.
