If it's crap ... We'll tell you
I'm not the most optimistic person when it comes to that remake trend but I have to be honest with you, sometimes all you have to do is associate the perfect series of names and I'm in.
Yesterday comicbookmovie.com via The Wrap revealed Tom Hiddleston (You may remember him from two little comicbook movies identified as Thor and The Avengers) was serioulsly considering the lead role of Eric Draven in the reboot of the iconic Alex Proyas' The Crow.
The fan-favorite star of Thor and The Avengers may just be about to add another comic book character to his resume, as he is in early talks to play the lead role of Eric Draven in Relativity Media'a reimagining of The Crow!
This is big news for fans of both Hiddleston and James O'Barr's classic character.
The Avengers actor is in talks to star as Eric Draven in Spanish filmmaker F. Javier Gutierrez's (Before the Fall) reboot/make/imagining of The Crow for Relativity Media. Apparently Hiddleston has met with the movie's producers, and even sent them photos of a homemade makeup test he did, with official test expected to take place over the next few days.
The original Crow was a loose adaptation of the James O'Barr's graphic novel but managed to find the perfect balance between a depressed emo gothic antihero, an unusual cinematography (yeah yeah long before Sin City, and 300 there was this movie) and (for the time) an underground rock soundtrack to help the storytelling. All those little pieces came together and turned this movie into a classic of the 90's. And apparently, It seems that this new adaptation will be closer to its source material.
I don't know for you but when I hear The Crow, I think Brandon Lee and vice/versa. But today who really remembers Brandon Lee's career in details? Do not lie, not a lot of us, actually. But one thing remains of all he did, it's his performance as Draven. So, with all those talks of reboot after the succession of horrible "HORRIBLE" sequels to the original, it was hard to admit that maybe there was a tiny little chance it turns out good. After all, they fucked up 4 times and I've learned to never underestimate the Hollywood total lack shame:
- Vincent Perez, The Crow 2 (1996) It picked just there
- Eric Mabius, The Crow 3 (2000) Who's that guy????
- Edward "no hope" Furlong, The Crow 4 (2005) I said it, no hope
- Marc Dacascos in the TV series (1998) Just a Brandon Lee look a like
None of them embodied Draven, because there was no real acting behind each of their performances. They put the make up on and they forgot to create the personnality behind. For that kind of job, the new Crow needed to find the perfect Draven.
First it have been reported that Relativity media had some interest in James McAvoy. Great actor, of course. He managed to shine in everything even though the story was weak or made no sense (Wanted). However that choice wasn't convincing enough in my opinion. I don't think the emo rock style suits him very well. The same arguments apply to Bradley Cooper. Seriously, Bradley Cooper???
Then Joseph Gordon Levitt's name started to pop up here and there. Why not? Put the white powder on Hersher's face and you got your Draven. And I picture JGL easily as a emo depressed, crazy avenger spirit. And for the third time, they surprisingly throw a real competent actor name out there. So, if that last update is right, Hiddles is probably on the case? I have no right to doubt now, don't you think?
I'm telling you somebody wants to make it right this time. Plus I add to my list:
_ F. Javier Gutierrez(checked!) Tres Dias 'A must see at least once in a lifetime to understand why I believe in him.
_ Cliff Dorfman(checked!) who wrote the sript of Warrior, oscar nominated movie starring Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton
I'M A TRUE BELIEVER NOW
Now a little question:
1) Who would make a perfect crow?
2) Last unknown but essential data: Who will be the cinematographer and how big the budget will be for a good production value?
