I'll go even further than Timmy Cupcakes by saying that JRPG fans should just checkout pretty-much every MegaTen game. Nocturne, the Persona series, Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, Devil Summoner 1 & 2, Devil Survivor 1 & 2, Strange Journey...I actually like Atlus's stuff a lot better than Square's. Of course I'm still a big FF fan as well. Now if only Shin Megami Tensei 1 & 2 had come out in the states!...
Good opening quesiton. Probably the greatest JRPG outside FF has to be Xenogears. Persona is amazing, you should check out Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne if you enjoy that franchise. Its quite a bit darker and slightly more difficult. Also the Suikoden series has some real gems.

About video game movies, I don't know if you guys already knew about this beforehand but please check this out.

There was a game called sweet home, one of the scrolls read "You are now entering a house of residing evil." or something like that.
Oh Hell Yes! Kevin you just became my favorite member of the Loading Bar the moment you said Skies of Arcadia. Don't get me wrong, I love Persona 4, but the mere fact that someone even remembers how good Skies of Arcadia was makes you a true gaming expert.
As a film student and gamer, I understand that dichotomy Jeff explained when he mentioned if a video game movie can stand on its own when you take the interactivity out. It is one of the biggest hurdles for any adaptation to jump. Game narratives are what they are because they are built on a higher level of immersion than movies. You're not just a viewer; you are a participant. You would be better off just watching playthroughs on Happy Hour instead.
And not every game works as a movie property, which we have seen already. You can't just say you're making Angry Birds into a movie. You need a property that could actually fit a movie narrative.
What do I suggest for video game adaptations to overcome this hurdle? Two things:
1) Focus on game's with strong core narratives. The game's basic story needs to be able to stand on its own two feet without the player's input. There are plenty of choices out there, from Tim Schafer games to Telltale properties to Mass Effect. Even without the choice options, these stories can work with strong scripts and focused narrative flow.
2) Do miniseries instead! Television feels like a more viable outlet than movies for game adaptations. You may not get the biggest budget to do a full on adaptation for a game like Mass Effect (...yet!..), but that's why you don't start with that. Focus on the smaller games first that have stories that can appeal to mass audiences. Find an independent property, look for an older game, think of ways to cheat production limitations, etc. I would much rather see an episodic television adaptation that fleshes out the story as much as possible than a two hour cliff notes movie.
This is an issue I have thought a long time on and I fully agree with the Bartenders. Only when people actually take the property serious will we see actual good movies (OR TELEVISION SERIES!) from video games. It just takes time and smart people involved. I better graduate from film school faster then :)
