I remember the VHSs and DVDs of martial arts movies I used to rent from Blockbuster back in the day were always distributed by the Weinstein Company, always cut down, only offered in dubbed English, had their soundtracks completely gutted and replaced with the most bland crap imaginable and had major plot points removed. They even cut down the fight scenes. Why would you cut those of all things? As for this movie, it looks gorgeous from the standpoint of cinematography, although it may get a little overly stylistic for some people. (Southern China apparently is always experiencing rain and is locked in perpetual midnight.) The story is a little unfulfilling, though. There seems to be a setup for this big conflict between Northern and Southern styles, but it never really plays out.
The cinematography is excellent and works very well with very good fight scenes! I agree with Toren that the storytelling is the main problem. We are told many things with on screen text that should have been shown and by the end I was wanting for more in terms of a bigger climax. I guess what you would say are the two main plot points don't build as they could and I would have preferred a third plot point as well directly involving Ip. Otherwise, I think it's very good film especially for those who like the genre.
As a martial artist, I am very excited to see a movie that truly shows the intricacy that goes into the art. I might wait to see the original cut though. Shame on you Harvey Wienstien.
Zing Zang Yu...Oh Leon. lol
I think Corey Yuen is better than Yuen Woo Ping. So there.
Great review guys. As informative as it was humorous
Yeah, what Co-Host said is true, there is another Ip Man movie made recently titled Ip Man: The Final Fight, with Anthony Wong as Ip Man.
