Okay, please put down your guns... knives too... okay then... Some of you may ask: Why would he DEFEND this turd? Well, I'll tell you why; I love it. Not joking. Love it. I grew up with this movie. I could NEVER hate it. No matter how hard I try. I don't think this movie's as bad as everyone says, and I'm gonna tell you why.
Argument against: Godzilla looks nothing like Godzilla.
Rebuttal: Oh, I'm sorry, would you prefer THIS?!
above: "It's a realistic take on the story!!!"
I'm not saying the originals were crap, but they wanted to do a realistic take on the story. Also, do you REALLY think that Godzilla's original design would have worked at all in this movie? It would have sucked. Visually at least.
Argument against: The dialog is horrible.
Rebuttal: Yes, because we all know that the original Godzilla films were not known for the giant monster battles, but the WRITING!!! THAT'S what sells the tickets!!! (Insert sarcasm anytime here)
Argument against: It's an okay film, but the only real problem is that they named it Godzilla.
Rebuttal: I agree with the first part. To quote the great James Rolfe, "It's not groundbreaking entertainment. It's popcorn entertainment. If you're looking to be entertained, you'll be entertained, but if you're looking for something more, like the meaning of life or something that'll blow you away, you're gonna be dissapointed...". That's the key word: it's popcorn entertainment. Honestly, it's called Godzilla, it's about a giant, radioactive reptile that rampages through the city. What do you expect? Now for the naming thing, here's one reason this movie just can't win. Why? Consider this; consider this movie's NOT named Godzilla. Imagine if ALL referances to Godzilla were removed. What would you think? You'd think it's a Godzilla RIP-OFF. It's just one of those dammed if you don't, dammed if you do moments. Just look at it with an open mind.
Argument against: Why is it just Godzilla? Why doesn't he have any monsters to fight?
Rebuttal: Ahem, *cough*... IT'S A REMAKE!!! It's a remake of the original Godzilla. It follows the same formula: reptile+radiation=Godzilla, Godzilla+city=destruction. This movie follows that formula, but takes a few creative liberties.
Argument against: It's nothing like the original.
Rebuttal: Again, IT'S A REMAKE!!! There's simply no point whatsoever in making a remake if it's the same thing(*cough*CHILD'SPLAY*cough*). Godzilla is like a good version of Super Mario Bros. The Movie (just roll with it). Look at Mario Bros., it took some cretive liberties from the game to make it more plausible (fire flaowers=flamethrowers). However, some of those didn't work out too well (Bowser=Dennis Hopper). But with Godzilla, it took some better liberties (Japan=New York, Godzillasaurus=Marine Iguana, etc.) Like I said, you need to look at it with an open mind.
There's just a few of my arguments. If you disagree, fine. I just thought I'd try and lift some hate off of a pretty decent movie. They took some creative liberties to make it more realistic, and for the most part, I believe it worked quite well. It DOES have it's faults (babies=velociraptors), I'm not saying it doesn't, but like James said above, if you want to be entertained, you'll be entertained. Is it the best movie ever? No. Best Godzilla movie ever? No. Worse than Hulk (2003)? HEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLL NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
