Lately it seems like there have been more "people of interest" being looked at than actually cast, but no longer: 'Secretariat' actress Diane Lane has been cast to play the role of Martha Kent in Zack Snyder's "Superman: Man of Steel". She will perform alongside recently-cast Henry Cavill as her adopted son Clark (aka Superman), and (if the rumors are to be believed) Kevin Costner as her husband Jonathan.

Director Zack Snyder had this to say about the actress:
"This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination."

The character of Martha Kent has always been a key part of what makes Superman a real person. While father Jonathan Kent was always his moral compass, Martha Kent was the one who always supported him, went along with his crazy ideas (like the whole "underwear on the outside" thing) and taught him how to be a good human. What's funny is that Lane previously played the parent of a super-powered son in the miserable 2008 bomb "Jumper" starring Hayden Christiansen - only in that film she was secretly part of the evil organization tasked with tracking her son down and killing him. Hopefully, she'll be a bit kinder to her adopted Kryptonian son in the new Superman film, produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures and scheduled for release in December of 2012.

@garyrealitybites - You're thinking of Spider-Man (that OTHER film with a no name actor surrounded by big names). Sally Field was cast as Aunt May.

Having a movie with a twenty-something Clark and two late forty-early fifties parents seems okay. I don't get what's wrong with Diane Lane. It's like any other comic book character - some authors make her younger and fit (real "cheerleader married the quarterback farm-girl" stuff), some authors make her old, chubby, and doting. Surprisingly, just like Aunt May - sometimes she's old and useless, sometimes she's vital and irascible.

I thought that SALLY FIELD was cast as MARTHA KENT a long time ago.Don't get me wrong,DIANE LANE is a great actress and smokin' hot,but I thought Field would have brought a motherly warmth to the role. I guess when they decided to maybe cast KEVIN COSTNER as Pa Kent, they had to go a lot younger. I have faith in these SNYDER/NOLAN casting choices, and I'm looking forward to the movie. I wish Nolan had chosen to intorduce brand new villians to the film, but we'll see how it turns out.

@Walter J. Kovacs Actually, I have to say that it seems like Nolan is secretly influencing a lot of the casting decisions already. He is the producer/godfather of this movie after all. I mean, Henry Cavill who was up for Batman in Batman Begins is playing Superman and I would never expect a guy like Snyder to nab people like Kevin Costner and Diane Lane who are both Oscar-calibre actors for any film on his own. OK, sure Snyder helped rediscover Michael Fassbender and made him a big supporting actor who's just about to get his big break in plenty of projects and he managed to get greatly underused and underappreciated (at least by the general public) actors like Jackie Earle Haley and Patrick Wilson among others to be in Watchmen and he's working with Jon Hamm but I don't think these two people would necessarily be the people normally interested in working with Zack Snyder.

I mean, rumors are that both Daniel Day-Lewis and Viggo Mortensen are in the running to play the villain (most likely Zod) and somebody like Zack Snyder would never in a million years get actors of that calibre by himself! Also, let's not forget that Mortensen and Day-Lewis were two of the first choices to play Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins before Liam Neeson/Ken Watanabe were cast. So, I'm sorry but this movie at least as far as casting goes seems to still be Christopher Nolan's Superman. I mean, they've picked a relative unknown guy who's been acclaimed before and then they surround him with an all-star, respectable, Oscar-calibre cast. Am I the only one who seems to think that as far this movie goes, it's pretty much shaping up to be the Batman Begins for Superman? As far as I see, Nolan is making or influencing all the important elements of character, story, script, themes, etc. and Zack Snyder will only serve as a director for hire here. So calm down.

Are you sure I mean an older Lois Lane sounds a bit better because lets face it we don't know how slow or fast Superman ages. He's alive in the Batman Beyond comics and doesn't that take place in the 22nd century. So him aging slower then what everyone else does makes a lot more sense than getting some young women to play Lois so we can go through the puppy dog love shit all over again.

Not a bad choice, if a bit young. Then again, if the Costner casting is true, then it'll work since they're both in there in their mid 40s-50s.
