Gimme a solid movie all around

Well, another year, another summer of awesome movies...er, right?

So you don't need me to tell you that 2010 has been a less than stellar year for the film industry, especially following the superduperness of last year. So how's the summer been holding up in a lackluster year? well...we can only hope it only gets better from here...

The Summer of 2010....so far (the ones I've seen/care about)
(I count May as summer for movies)
Iron Man 2

While a tad disappointing compared to the first film, Iron Man 2 succeeds in action, better villains, and more characters, all without falling victim to the famed "sequelitis" effect that's plagued so many others. It's easily one of the most enjoyable blockbusters of recent years, and definitely one of the best blockbuster sequels ever.

Enjoyable, but forgettable...yep.

Get Him To the Greek

I love Judd Apatow, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a comedy classic in my eyes, so a spin-off adventure starring the eccentric Aldous Snow had me excited since the film was announced. While the finished product wasn't quite Sarah Marshall good, I laughed my ass off. Also worth mentioning is a surprise turnout by none other than...Diddy? Never thought I'd say that. Another solid film to add to the Apatow list. Now if only I could erase Year One from existence...

Toy Story 3 (!!!!!!!!!!!)

I'm a Pixar freak, as I'm sure most movie watchers are, and I love love love Toy Story, largely in part to me growing up close to exactly with the toys' owner, Andy. However, I wasn't without doubt going in to the theater. The term "threequel" usually brings despair, but Pixar is so far without fault, even though Cars is bordering on it. So did it live up? FUCK YES. In fact, it has taken its throne as my favorite Toy Story, and next to Up as the top of Pixar (which is pretty much the best of the best). I've seen the film 3 times so far, and I plan on doing so a couple more times over the next few weeks.

A+

The Last Racebender Airbender

I've made a genuine effort to avoid the shitty movies over the years, but I had to see this mess for myself. As a fan of the show, I was very interested in this film over its development and very VERY confused as to why it was given to M. Night. The movie ended up being laughably terrible with some of the worst acting and oddest acting choices, dull action, awful dialogue, fast-forward story, and complete lack of any real character.

also, pronunciations like AHng, AHvatar, and sOHkka make me want to punch random people in the theater. There is not a single thing in this trainwreck that doesn't fail, so it receives an appropriate...

So those are the few movies of the summer that I saw that are worth talking about. Get Him To the Greek and Toy Story 3 remain the two saving graces of an uninteresting summer so far. So what about the rest of the summer? Anything else? well, there is some hope actually.

Predators:

You are one ugly motherfu- wait. Where's those alien fellahs you've been hangin round with for a couple movies? Just you vs. humans this time? Sweet! (hopefully)

Anticipation level: 4.5/5

Despicable Me: Early reviews are showing good things, but non-Pixar/Dreamworks animation always has me weary. But if Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is any indicator that it can be done, then I'm on board

Anticipation level 3.5/5

Inception:

^see picture above

Anticipation level: 5/5

The Sorcerer's Apprentice: Looks interesting, but most likely uninteresting. After Kick-Ass, Nick Cage is on my radar again.

Anticipation level: 3/5

Salt: I hate Angelina Jolie, I don't care about this movie in the slightest.

Anticipation level: 1/5

The Other Guys: I love what I've seen so far. Will Ferrell is still relevant to me, which seems to be untrue for alot of others nowadays. Also, Mark Wahlberg working his comedic chops looks hilarious.

Anticipation Level: 4/5

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World:

Edgar Wright, Michael Cera, awesome comic, rave early reviews

YES!!

Anticipation level: 5/5

The Expendables: The manliest movie ever made. An action movie with every action star ever, I'm interested.

Anticipation level: 3.5/5

So that's the summer, past and future. Did I miss anything that you've seen/ really want to see? Don't think May counts as summer (well fuck you)? Anything else you wish to add?

Never, never, never, FOR GOD´S SAKE NEVER completelly trust the very first reviews to come out for up-coming movies.

They are always aware about being the first reviews coming out, so they review more to get people talking and place trends, instead of being accurate(either Some ol´s Bullshit, or Full Price). Either that or they are written by "rebel" assholes like Armond White.

ryante,
I'm not a comic fan either, and I've yet to read Scott Pilgrim, just so you know. However, I'm still so unbelievably pumped for the movie.

I'm glad I've instilled some interest in the movie for ya. Although I'm sure someone else would have done it as August 13 nears. And sure, I'll add the release dates, didn't even think of that.

also, I really hope Ant-Man works out. Edgar Wright directing a movie that will be in the same universe of The Avenger's? Sounds awesome, let's just hope no one screws it up

ryante, I may have been willing to argue over IM2 a few months ago, but I'm done with that at this point. It was like defending Watchmen all over again, eventually I was just done.

"except for whatever that Michael Cera film is. I'm so tired of him"
I find it kindof odd that you haven't heard of Scott Pilgrim at this point, but I hope you will put aside your annoyance towards Cera for Edgar Wright's direction. Now if you're asking who Edgar Wright is, then I must show you to Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and even his television series Spaced. He's fantastic, and the early reviews of Scott Pilgrim are glowing. If you know full well who he is, don't like him, and don't care about Scott Pilgrim even though he's directing it, then...then......who the hell wouldn't like Edgar Wright??

I'm also interested in a few other summer movies
Eat Pray Love, because although it's based off a book on self-discovery, it's a very good book and may be one of the better movies to come out for older women.

Dinner for Schmucks: Ok, it looks like a stupid comedy. But it's Steve Carell. If anyone can make a stupid comedy, it's him with the added bonus of Zach Galifianakis.

Pirahna 3D: Sex, Sex....and BLOOD! How can you not want to watch it at least a little.

Well, the only movie I was looking forward to in the first half of summer was Toy Story 3 (and Iron man 2, but I knew it probably wouldn't be as good at the first). Can't wait for Inception and Scott Pilgram, and hoping to death that Predators and the Expendables will not suck!

THANK YOU. Someone finally recognizing Get Him to the Greek.
Comment by KrissKross on July 7, 2010 at 1:59am
well the anticipation level doesn't necessarily reflect on how good the movie will be, but my own personal interest.

I have close to zero interest in Salt.

Joe's the name, I'd love to hear what kindof redeeming factors bring TLA up to a C
Comment by Joe's the name on July 7, 2010 at 1:25am
First off. The last airbender deserved a C (in my opinion)
Second, I CAN'T WAIT FOR INCEPTION!!!
Comment by Maxamus on July 7, 2010 at 1:23am
I don't think Salt will be terrible, but I'm not really excited for it either. Everything else I agree with.
