If it's crap ... We'll tell you

About a month ago, it was reported that Universal was planning to revamp 'The Mummy,' returning the creature to his horror roots. The new Mummy is set to be penned by Jon Spaihts ('The Darkest Hour'), and now the project has added a pair of high-profile producers. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman's company K/O Paper Products has just signed a 2-year production deal with the studio which will not only see them reimagining 'The Mummy,' but also 'Van Helsing' as well. Reportedly, Universal's next crack at the monster-hunting character will star Tom Cruise. No word yet on the precise schedule of these productions, nor if Orci and Kurtzman will be lending their talents to the screenwriting in addition to producing.
Ok, so a few things to take away from this story. First, 'The Mummy' reboot now has more muscle behind it than just 'The Darkest Hour' scribe. Orci and Kurtzman's 2009 'Star Trek' script was phenomenal and their work on 'Fringe' has been outstanding. I'm not saying they're without flaw, I mean they did inexplicably cull 'Transformers 2' from their collective brain, but I strongly feel these are two of the best screenwriters working in Hollywood right now. They've also done quite a bit of producing in the past, so this is not a new move for them. The other thing to take away here is that Universal is indeed planning to reboot 'Van Helsing,' which is sorely needed as their first attempt was abysmal. I'm not sure how I feel about Tom Cruise in the lead, but I am interested in competent artists taking a serious approach to the character. My only concern is that I hope Orci and Kutzman are involved in the script and not just producing. I can see them doing great things with both 'Van Helsing' and 'The Mummy' and I can't see why they would only be brought on to produce, seems like a waste of talent. But that's just me, what do you guys think?
Do you think this is a good move for Orci & Kurtzman? Would you be interested in a 'Van Helsing' reboot they wrote?

Comment by Jax Lander Darnerailey on May 3, 2012 at 3:24pm I really did like the idea behind Van Helsing. A monster hunter having to face not one, not two, but three or more classic Universal Monster. Like a prequel to Monster Squad. But the over the plot and nonsense character killed the movie for me. I still watch it from time to time for cheesy MST3 moments. A reboot, a hardcore reboot, would be nice and welcomed. No right hand of God, mysterious connects, impossible action sequences, or crazy Sommer cg crap.
Comment by Jon Riddle on May 3, 2012 at 2:16pm Fuck the Van Helsing franchise. The only good thing about it was that the Van Helsing movie prompted Universal to release their Legacy Collection boxed sets featuring much MUCH better movies than Van Helsing. If you're interested in seeing a Van Helsing-style movie done well, watch either House of Frankenstein or House of Dracula. I watched and enjoyed both of these, thanks to those aformentioned boxed sets.

Comment by Dr. Detfink on May 2, 2012 at 2:50pm About right for the talent re-writing this crap.
Comment by Reuel Gomez on May 2, 2012 at 9:28am I'm more exited at seeing what they (Kurtzman/Orci) do with the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man.

Comment by The GodDamn Fatman on May 2, 2012 at 3:04am I think there are plenty of ways to do a bad ass monster hunter movie so I am interested in how Van Helsing comes out. As for the Mummy I'm kinda ok with that first movie at least. However it is horror so either way I'll probably watch it eventually.
Comment by Arsène Lupin the Third on May 2, 2012 at 2:33am Gift they may have better eyes as producers then writers look at Ben Afleck behind the camera and tell me is that the guy you though would be there when you watch Mallrats?
Comment by Darth_Siskel on May 2, 2012 at 2:29am Van Helsing?!?
