@Toe Knee Bee Ears-Fungsmonkey is a saint for trying to communicate with a person like you. I don't know how he does it.
@Herman Yes I think you should have to. If you're going to criticize my logic you should have a reason why. Just saying "it's ridiculous" is not enough. Imagine if the Spill crew did a movie review and just said "it's ridiculous" Would you like their reviews if they were all like that? Maybe you would be satisfied with a two word review but, I would want to know why the movie was ridiculous.
I think you completely misunderstood me. I did not say that just because someone not part of a specific gender, ethnicity or culture is incapable of recognizing things that are offensive to other groups. My first comment was a question, not a statement. I said "Can a male critic really say if a movie is empowering for women or not?” "Can non-Jewish critics truly say that the movie is offensive to Jewish people?" I was posing a question.
You can’t truly know what it’s like to be someone else until you walked a mile in their shoes.
Yes, one may assume that something might offend someone else but, that person cannot know for certain that it will because they are not that person.
@TreeTheOak and Herman Regarding Sucker Punch, I have not seen it so I can’t say if I like it or not. I’m not defending or condemning it. I just believe that women should be the ones to decide if it’s empowering to them or not. Men should not be the ones to decide.
I feel the same about all groups and media. For example, many people find Speedy Gonzales racially offensive to Mexicans. I have a Mexican friend who loves Speedy Gonzales. He thinks Speedy Gonzales is hilarious. Who am I as a white man to say that he should be offended? It’s not my place to say that. I have no right to tell him what he should be offended at. That’s up to him to decide not me.
Comment by TimZ on April 13, 2012 at 2:03am I quite enjoyed Sucker Punch. You all are way too hard on that movie semingly because you had some preconceived notions on what it was supposed to be and you contrast that to what it actually was. I saw it just for what it was not what it supposedly sought out to be. What it was was a fun, stylized, well choreographed action pic featuring hot women in anime caliber fights. Certainly the rest of the goings on were a bit lame but the meat of the movie was quite fun. I've seen it several times and still can't get enough of the fight scene in the train, or the samurai battle. Oh yeah, one last thing: I was amused and satisfied by the twist at the end. Overall good stuff. Not the best of the year but certainly not the worst.
Comment by Pooky1991 on April 12, 2012 at 9:38pm Really? Mars Needs Moms? I actually thought it was a great movie. I was never bored and actually came close to crying multiple times.

in terms of being able to judge something as offensive, ask yourself this "does this serve Any purpose?" are Jews, blacks, Mexican being stereotyped for satirical reasons? Are the characters that are acting in a racial manner being used for any point? (such as uncle Ruckus from the Boondocks being used as an extreme example of the self hating black man) or are they simply cast or portrayed that way for nothing more but comic effect or exploitation? (such as the women in Sucker Punch or All of Soul Plane)
you don't need to be PC to answer that question and yes you can still have a guilty pleasure by enjoying these movies despite this. However you should acknowledge that yes this is offensive but i can still chuckle.
hmm that made me sound kinda racist, but i guess my point is you can enjoy sucker punch but you cant defend the idea that its somehow empowers women.
@Toe Knee Bee Ears-I shouldn't have to. Just because I'm not part of a specific gender, ethnicity or culture does not mean I'm incapable of recognizing things that are offensive to other groups. Are you so objective that someone has to explain in detail why stereotypes and sexism in films might be offensive? That's sad.

Comment by GorTheMovieGod on April 12, 2012 at 4:01pm It's sad that the guy who directed Kinsey and Gods and Monsters is the one who made the worst Twilight film out of the four.
