If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Ok, ok... so we know the site is going through a lot of changes right now and there are many questions floating around out there in the Spill-verse. Over the week, we have been gathering them up and trying to answer them the best we can and upon request - we're compiling them all into a list for our visitors to help reduce confusion. As new information comes out, we'll be updating this page with the latest news. Let's get to it!
Update! - Jeff and Jason have launched "Rage Select". See below.
Update! - "Spoiled! With Korey and Co-Host" added to site. See below.
Update! - "Let's Do This" confirmed to continue. See below.
Update! - "The Daily Spill" added to site. See below.
Q: What happened?
A: In brief, budget cuts at our parent company resulted in staff reduction and layoffs all around the board and we were asked to let go of many good people, resulting in the loss of a couple podcasts and site features. It is an unfortunate economy and unfortunate events that were beyond our control and we regard all of our employees as friends and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. Meanwhile, with a "back to basics" approach here at Spill, we are hard at work developing new content to replace previous shows and a new direction for certain parts of the site, while still focused on what the fans want and doubling our efforts on our strongest content. For more details, listen to the Call-In Shows Korey posted HERE.
Q: What about [insert employee here]?
A: Due to the needs of the site, we brought our creative staff back down to the "O.G." core Spill Crew (Korey, Co-Host 3000, Cyrus, and Leon) with Leon taking a slightly smaller role on the site (because he also has a full-time job outside of Spill). On the production staff, we still have MandySavage keeping the site together, animator/illustrator Tyler, and animator/jack-of-all-trades Fungusmonkey rounding out the team. Oh, and yes - Goatsey is still around (although we hear he might have to start turning tricks down on the corner).
Q: What about [insert podcast here]?
A: Obviously, because we lost valued hosts and employees certain podcasts were no longer feasible. The Loading Bar, Remote Viewing, and The Untitled Billy/Korey Show have all been closed up because their hosts (or secondary hosts) have left the site. We're sad to see them go, but we will be bringing new and exciting content to the site to replace them. As for the rest of the previous podcasts:
- ACOCO: UPDATE! Korey has announced that ACOCO will remain on the site and stay relatively the way it is - May 24th Call-In Show (time here)
- The Daily Spill: UPDATE! Cyrus and Korey have launched their new daily news podcast (to replace the regular news articles) called The Daily Spill. You can listen to the first episode HERE and find it every day on the Movie News carousel.
- Let's Do This: UPDATE! Korey and Co-Host will continue to record Let's Do This for Wednesdays in it's regular format. They will ALSO be creating other podcasts and content together throughout the week with a variety of different themes/topics.
- Spoiled!: UPDATE! Korey and Co-Host have revealed their first new podcast called Spoiled! which will be a live call-in show where they discuss (in full on spoiler mode) details about recent movies as well as upcoming ones and talk calls from the site.
- The Original Gentlemen: The planned show with Leon and Cyrus that would have followed up LEOG is currently on hold while things are sorted out and developed. Because Leon will already be on ACOCO and the film reviews, it's unclear if this show will still be introduced or a new show created for Fridays.
- Movie reviews: We will absolutely continue to review movies in both audio and video format, just like always. Currently the plan is to continue these reviews in a similar fashion but slight adjustments/tweaking may take place.
Q: No more Happy Hours or The Loading Bar?
A: We wish Kevin, Nick, Jason and Jeff the absolute best and we have every bit of faith that they will continue forward in their respective careers as successfully as they have here on Spill. We hear that Jason and Jeff are hard at work preparing their next step and discussing the possibility of obtaining the necessary rights to continue The Loading Bar as it's own site, and we will update their fans when we have more information.
Q: What about The Loading Barmageddon money and/or E3?
A: The money raised from The Barmageddon was raised by Jeff and Jason, the event was planned by Jeff and Jason, and the money was intended to be used to help The Loading Bar. As such, all Barmageddon funds will be given over to Jeff and Jason to use as they see fit, as was promised and expected by Barmageddon donators. Since the decision to reduce our staff was sudden and unexpected, they had already purchased tickets, booked flights and rooms, set up interviews, and prepared all their gear to attend E3. So - they will still be attending E3 and covering it the way only they can... just not for Spill. Keep in touch with them on Twitter and Facebook for further updates as they have them or to ask any questions regarding their future projects.
Q: Why not give them all "goodbye episodes"?
A: Frankly, there just wasn't time. This change wasn't something we knew was happening or were prepared for. We would have loved to give every podcast the chance to continue for another week or two and give them a proper send-off, but that just wasn't in the cards. At least LEOG (whose end was purely coincidental) had the ability to say farewell. However, it brings us to the next big question...
Q: Will old podcasts still be available?
A: Absolutely. Not only will we keep the current archives of our previous content available, we're hard at work developing a new archive system that will make it even easier to find, sort, and listen to our older content from any device. We will have more information on that in the coming months, but for now rest assured that our previous recordings aren't going anywhere.
Q: What about Spill Dot Con / RTX?
A: We will still be doing Spill Dot Con at RTX this year, and the schedule we posted HERE will remain almost entirely intact, thanks to all the cast members and hosts committing their time to appear for the fans, even though they are no longer part of the company. This will most likely be the final appearance of most of these shows, and a mixture of their farewell podcast and announcements about their future plans. If you haven't already bought tickets, this is one more reason to be there.
Q: So you're saying we should all freak out and yell at Hollywood?
A: First off, no. Secondly, NO. This wasn't a case of them "taking away our toys" or anything sinister or conspiratorial. This was just a case of good ol' fashioned economics, and the need to downsize and reduce overhead costs. They lost a lot of good people too (some of which we are close friends with as well), so as much as you want someone to blame, there just isn't anything to blame here other than basic math and hard times.
Q: How can the fans help?
A: The best way to help Spill is the exact same way you can ALWAYS help Spill:
Whitelist us in your adblocking software so we get ad revenue. We'll be putting up a new store soon - purchase merchandise and help support the site that way. Tell your friends about the site. Share it on social media. Talk about our content whenever, wherever, and however you can. Subscribe to our YouTube channel and like our videos. Send those out to people, too. The more people who see us, the more ad revenue, the more sold merchandise, the higher the visitors the more attractive to sponsors we are, and so on. The best way to help our site is by being the best Spillio you can be. If there's ever any other way you can help, we'll let you know.
Q: How will Spill.com be changing?
A: It's far too early to tell, but things definitely will be changing, growing, and evolving in the coming weeks/months. We'll still be offering daily content and podcasts. We'll still be making animated videos. Beyond that, it's a glorious new day here on Spill and anything is possible. The hosts and production team are all hard at work developing and refining new ideas. Now that the site is much less expensive to run, we have an opportunity to push forward with proposed site revamps and much needed updates. We'll be bringing out a new site store where you can help support the site and get great T-shirts and other merchandise. Other than that, you'll have to keep tuned in to find out as we start Spill Phase Two.
Have a question that wasn't answered? Post it below and we'll get to it as soon as we can (or as soon as we know the answer).
