Tobey Maguire has spun his last web. Who's the villain who took him down? Sony Pictures.
Are you as shocked as I am? Sure their were problems between Raimi and the studio. Sure their were problems with the script and who would be the next villain. Sure their were budget problems. But to cancel a 2.5 billion dollar movie franchise is something you don't hear of everyday. While Spider-Man 3
left a bad taste in everybody's mouth, I sort of had hope for the fourth installment. Raimi knew what went wrong last time, and some of the script ideas and some of the casting propositions sounded fantastic. I'm not that upset the series has come to an end, but I am upset over Sony Picture's next move:
Sony Pictures plans to reboot the franchise as soon as 2012.
What the fuck?! A reboot already?!
Yes, that means new casting, new story arc, and just an overall whole new beginning. Personally, I think Sony is on crack. Just because you wanted more villains and a modestly lower budget doesn't mean you can scrap an entire series and start fresh. I don't care what anyone says: Tobey Maguire is Spider-Man. He's the one I saw on the big screen in 2001. I was just 13 years old when I saw the first Spider-Man
, and now I'm 20 (time flies doesn't it?). Personally, I think it would be difficult to watch a reboot and see a different man under the mask.
I'm not completely disappointed though. Maybe it was good to end things now. But I still was optimistic about Raimi redeeming the franchise, and I think it was very much possible to deliver another solid Spider-Man
film. Overall, I'm a little bummed out. There was no harm in making a fourth installment, and a reboot as of now does not
seem like a good idea. So a big "F*** You!" to Sony Pictures for teasing people and then shattering our dreams...okay I'm exaggerating, but you get the point.
