Sony Pictures have hired writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia to pen the latest attempt to reboot the 'Zorro' franchise, taking the character back to his roots in the Spanish colonial era of California. The renewed interest in the franchise - absent since the two Antonio Banderas films in 1998 and 2005 - may be due in part to rumors of Fox pursuing a revisionist take on the character that would portray him as a post-apocalyptic vigilante.
Federman and Scaia - who are best known for their work on TV as writers for 'Charlies Angels', 'Human Target', and 'Jericho' - will be working on a script based partially on the 2005 novel 'Zorro' by Isabel Allende, which attempted to make the character and his struggles as historically accurate as possible. Placing the character inside pivotal events of the era could bring a whole new realm of interest to the franchise, similar to the popularity of the game series 'Assassin's Creed'. While it would be nice to see the masked avenger once again grace the silver screen, I think it would be difficult to find an actor who could so wholly embody the charisma, humor, and charm of the character better than Antonio Banderas (who was so iconic in the role, that he's even Zorro in cat form).
So Spillios - knowing that the film is once again a period piece, who would be your picks for director and lead actor? Who's got the chops to outperform the previous films and make 'Zorro' a lucrative franchise again?

I would pick Eduardo Kuno Becker Paz for Zorro
I would pick Javier Bardem for the villain
