This work was originally, and still is, a free online miniseries made during the 2008 writer's strike by Joss Whedon. He is famous for Buffy the Vampire series and Firefly. Dr Horrible, played by Neil Patrick Harris, has two dreams. They are to be accepted into the Evil League of Evil and to gain the heart of beloved Penny. But standing in the way of his dreams is the arch rival, the super hero with the super ego, Captain Hammer; played wonderfully by Nathan Fillion.
If this sounds extremely cheesy and cartoony, YES it is. Also it's a musical. Okay, stop rolling your eyes. It is played strictly for fun but with pathos. You will route for the "bad" guy and the muscial numbers are funny. Strickly, tongue and cheek. For an internet freebie, it has great production value. Joss Whedon pitched this to various studios but no taker, hence produced and paid personally by him. The productions runs in three acts for a total runtime of 42 minutes.
Now, you may wonder why purchase the DVD when the feature is online and free. Beside the better picture quality and sound, some really weird and cool extras, but really just to show support for this work.
The extra include two commentary tracks, one is a spirited discussion with the principal actors and Whedon. The other track...well, it's called "Commentary!, The Musical". It has nothing to do with the movie but just the cast and Whedon sing about the writer's strike and each other...more silly fun. Other extras, are the making of featurette (about 20 minutes) and 10 fan made videos (about 30 minutes in total), they want to join the Evil League of Evil (style similiar to Dr Horrible's audition application in the movie).
Overall, this DVD is whimsical and enjoyable. I'm glad I purchased it. And recommend people should watch it online and consider buying it. Maybe Mr Whedon will be enticed to have a sequel. ;)
