Kevin Clash, better known around the world as the voice of the lovable 'Sesame Street' monster Elmo, will be pulling the strings on a brand new film project outside any universe in which he has previously worked. Clash, in association with The Gotham Group, has decided to produce a movie version of the classic Raggedy Ann and Andy stories. For those unfamiliar, Raggedy Ann and Andy were sibling rag dolls created by Johnny Gruelle in the early 1900s. The plan for the new film is to incorporate both puppetry and CGI to bring the Raggedy twins, and a host of their friends, to life; celebrity cameos are also apparently a major component. In addition to Elmo, Clash also voiced characters such as Baby Sinclair on the Henson TV series 'Dinosaurs,' and Splinter in the first two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. No word yet on when production is set to begin.
Admittedly, this story will fall squarely into the "don't give a crap" category for a lot of people. But as a kid, I grew up with the Raggedy Ann and Andy books. Well, more likely they were either reprints or an entirely new series of books, but they were a big part of my childhood and I'm interested to see how they bring the characters into a more contemporary setting with new filmmaking techniques. In particular I'm interested in see what they do with the ancillary characters such The Camel with the Wrinkled Knees. I think there's a dynamite puppet to be realized there. If you haven't seen the stellar documentary 'Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey,' I highly recommend it. After seeing the love, care, and craft that goes into all of Clash's characters, I am rooting for him to succeed in all his endeavors.
What do you guys think? Did anyone else grow up with these characters? Could this movie work?

Comment by rick jones on July 27, 2012 at 11:14pm Please Clash, don't do this. Leave Raggedy Ann alone, don't drag a wholesome classic through the c.g.i. formula just to cash in on a trend in classic character updates. It would mean a lot to many Raggedy Ann & Andy fans if you chose something else. We don't want to see them hyper, sarcastic & crude.
Comment by John Lemus on July 26, 2012 at 7:35am First Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters now this, some studios or going overboard on the crack again
Comment by Dennis Cornetta on July 26, 2012 at 7:21am I trust Kevin.
Comment by Ghoulprototype on July 26, 2012 at 1:13am They made a Raggedy Ann and Andy movie in the 1970's fun fact. The movie was all kinds of fucked up so if your curious look it up on youtube or something.
Comment by Luke Hero on July 26, 2012 at 12:35am Since he has been successful with puppets should be good....just make a script for kids & ADULTS
Comment by AACRO on July 26, 2012 at 12:04am This could go either way, a stunning reboot a la cloudy with a chance of meatballs or the ball of shit that was the smurfs.
Been done already, ages ago.
:) Can't wait, I grew up loving raggedy ann, and I think Kevin Clash is the right guy for the job, it will be interesting to see how he handles overseeing an entire film and reinvigorating something as nostalgic as the raggedy ann and andy stories.
When will the animated movie be released to blu ray?
Comment by Boatloads1017 on July 25, 2012 at 1:42pm Puppets and CGI? You have piqued my interest, Mr. Clash. Proceed.
