My Review of Prisoners: http://www.ryanhawbecker.com/2013/09/prisoners-movie-review.html?spref=tw …
It was ok, fun to watch and some great performances but the last third of the movie and the ending were way to hollywood.
Considering it has an Australian in Jackman as a lead it's disappointing this has only received limited release down here, playing in just 3 cinemas across two states, neither of which I live in and the one of which (Australian Capital Territory), is actually located inside New South Wales! And that's a shame, I saw a quick report on this movie on tv the other day and after reading this review I'd be even more anxious to see it. Looks like I'll have to wait till it's out to rent, or seek "other means".
It's ok man. And even though I don't share the same love of the movie as you do I respect your opinion as well.
@Poontang Fair enough, although I have to disagree with you when you say It's Boring, it had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. But opinion respected, Reading back the comment, I may have been a bit rude. Apologies
@Brian M ok then. Prisoners isn't smart. It's a pretty straightforward film as far as the whodunit mystery goes. Halfway through the movie I figured it out. Anyone that watches alot of movies would.
As far as themes of faith, redemption, the hunter becoming the hunted, being a 'prisoner' to your convictions, etc - it's handled fairly straightforwardly. I mean so much Christian imagery and so many shots that are deliberately held in frame. So it was kinda beating me over the head.
Hugh Jackman and Maria Bello were good. Jake Gylenhall was downright exceptional. I was honestly blown away by his performance. Terrance Howard was unintentionally funny. Everyone else was just serviceable.
Again I was blown away with Jake Gylenhall's performance. Prisoners also has a strong mood and atmosphere surrounding it. Reminded me alot of a Polanski movie. Creating a mood out of thin air almost. I loved that. My issue is so many people completely miss the point of Prisoners and are just on the 'I love it' bandwagon. Plus it's not a smart movie. It's all atmosphere and a performance that raises this film. I was honestly bored in most of this film. I can see someone liking it for the mood and acting - but don't say it's smart
Overrated? The movie was exactly what I thought it would be, a smart, intense, Edge of your seat thriller/Mystery, the acting is superb, and the cinematography is pretty good as well. So just because it's popular you don't like it? (Addressing the people you said it was overrated) "Mediocre" ? Oh please. If your gonna say something is over-rated, back it up with something.
Said it once, I'll say it again - Full Price!
Prisoners is over hyped and overrated. Its a mediocre movie. Anyone that thinks it's haunting and deep has been bamboozled.
Mhh, i still think you are spoiling quite a bit in your reviews of films like this one. Even if unintentionally most of the time. Don't want to bitch around, your reviews are as much fun to listen to after watching the movie, just saying though.
