Music

Please add "imo" to your posts. Your being subjective. NOT objective.

This was inspired by a Lets Do This (December 20 '09) and my opinions on Music.

I'll talk about Music first as i think it is more black and white than in film (and i'm more of a music guy than a movie guy).

Contrary to what the "critics" on youtube will lead you to beleive, there is no such thing as shitty music. You cannot objectively prove that a particular song or band is bad. You can prove that the lyrics are unoriginal and redundant or that the instruments are bland or... unoriginal, but you can't say that the song is shitty.

You may not like the song because in your experience you've heard other songs that were similar but spoke more (or spoke first) to you but that is a subjective opinion.

I could go in deeper but i'll move onto movies. Lets use Frost/Nixon as an example. I could use the obvious example that a guy born around the 60/70's will be more invested, and probably interested, in the story than a 90's person but i want to be a little more original. I'll thus use me and an example.

I like Nixon and i really enjoy his story. I see his time period as the downfall of the strong but unfortunately ignorant America in place for the modern whiny but more educated America (Please don't read into that, i'm just building up to a point).

That might not sound to interesting but keep in mind i am 17. Because of my personal experiences and interests in life i will approach Frost/Nixon differently from other people my age. While i would call the movie a gripping, but slow to build up, work of excellence, another person might call the movie a boring as hell.

Here's the thing that not many people seem to grasp though. NEITHER OF US IS WRONG!

Objectively you cannot prove either of our opinons on the movie. You can't really even prove that the acting was good or bad because everyone is looking for some thing different in their actors.

I could add more detail and point out that my beleif in this is why I like spill (which has up to 5 opinions instead of one) but damn it all if this post didn't get to be pretty big.

If any one is still reading or just skimming along read this last line please.

When you give an opinion on something which is not objectively provable, just add "imo" at the end of your sentece.

(imo = in my opinion if you're just joining us here on the internet. Hello. We hope you're enjoying your self.)

Or, crazy thought, you can take the common sense stance that it's in the person's opinion without them having to type "imo" like a knob.

And yes, there is bad music and things like unoriginality and redundancy can be demonstrated. What you hope for is a utopia where mediocre musicians aren't encouraged to get better because, "Meh, good enough for somebody..." and audiences aren't asked to get better taste. It does bands that actually put effort into being exceptional a disservice to be lumped in with jackasses that can barely play their instrument.

So yes, if you're saying that Nickelback's as talented as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones or even Radiohead, you aren't just giving a bad opinion; you are demonstrably, and quite possibly factually, WRONG.
