Phil Lord & Chris Miller In Talks For 'Carter Beats The Devil'

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are an interesting pair. After striking gold with '21 Jump Street,' they are currently working on a CG Lego movie, color me intrigued. Now it seems they're looking to add another project to their schedule. The two are in talks with Warner Brothers to direct 'Carter Beats the Devil,' based on the novel by Glen David Gold. The period mystery story revolves around a magician in the 1920s who finds himself in hot water when the President dies after participating in one of his tricks. The project has been bounced around from Paramount, where it was planned as a vehicle for Tom Cruise, to AMC, who considered adapting it as a series, and now to Warner Brothers. As of right now, no official deal has been finalized.

I am a huge fan of Lord and Miller. First they brought us the hilariously offbeat animated series 'Clone High,' and then they took a children's book and created the phenomenal animated feature 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.' As if that weren't enough, they then adapted an 80s television series, one that had no business being on the big screen over twenty years past its cancellation, and made it into one of the biggest surprises of the year. Also, I can't wait to see the Lego movie these guys put together. I'm really excited to see what they do with this particular project. True, I've never read 'Carter Beats the Devil,' but the description alone has me on board. The creative combination of genre and history, without venturing to the more off-the-wall approaches such as 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,' is definitely a plus in my book.

What do you guys think? Has anyone read 'Carter Beats the Devil?' Do you like this directing choice?

Could be good. I'd like to see what they could do with that premise.

I've read the book.  It's rich in history and details.  I really liked "Cloudy" so I'm thinking they can pull it off if they stick to the book.  The book deals with historical people such as Carter The Great and others that I won't mention due to spoilers.  So read the book, I think it's an enjoyable book, one of my favorites in a long time.  I did read it a few years ago, but I think I'll pick it up again!

I just hope they're fans of the show and not a "Work for hire" like the Crank Boys were for Ghost Rider 2.

With that resume, they can do whatever the hell they want as far as I'm concerned.

With all of those strong films behind them, I'm all for Carter Beats the Devil. I haven't read it, though. Now I'm excited if this turns out to be real.
