If it's crap ... We'll tell you
The Great Gatsby was one of my favorite books when I was in high school. Along with To Kill a Mockingbird it really made me think about metaphor in story telling for the first time. Both books taught me a lot about society and how people treat each other. And I'd love to see a well done version of The Great Gatsby done with amazing actors with a brilliant and accomplished director behind the camera... but not with stuff like this in it.
Baz Luhrman is doing the same thing he did with Moulin Rouge in that he's taking popular songs from the present and sticking them into the past. This time he's not doing it in a musical though... he's just having bands play jazzy versions of songs like this one
There is no way that wouldn't immediately pull me out of the movie. The closest thing I've seen to this is when I'm playing Bioshock Infinite and suddenly there's a barbershop quartette singing God Only Knows by the Beach Boys... but that was different. That was from a game where time and space were bent constantly, and where ideas from alternate futures and pasts bled into each other.
This is just supposed to be the past... but suddenly Crazy in Love is playing and it's the Roaring 20s? No thank you.
