PCP (Pop Culture Podcast) Episode 039: G4TV

Fellow nerds, geeks, dweebs, gamers and fanboys...gather around. Except for you furries. Y'all can stay on Deviantart for now. You all may recall a time when two networks, G4TV and Tech TV, merged to form the geekiest of unions: G4TechTV. Certainly many of you are familiar with the channel today but, did you know the channel used to be about games and only games? It's true! Join us as we recount the path taken as these respective meccas of nerdiness came together and how it became what it is today. We discuss the programs we loved, lost and the current state of affairs. We love you Pereira!

I can't really remember what was previewed but if you remind me I'm sure I can add my views on things.

You seem like you'd be a good fit. I'll tell the other guys and will see what's what. Incidentally, did you have any of the episodes we previewed in mind?

Cool, I'm an expert in internet cultural (twitter, internet Memes, video sites like Justintv and many other things), video games, Tv and e-sports. Especially the Starcraft2 e-sports scene. I've been following that for a few months now. I know a lot of other stuff but that's all I could think of and I want to things short.

I get what you mean Josteo. It isn't as though Munn is an abominable person or anything. She's just an attractive and capable comedienne looking to further her career. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. The producers are the ones telling her what to do come air time. However, I can only sympathize within the framework of the program. The reason Munn gets more flack then Diane Mizota is because Munn went out of her way to brand herself as a geek/nerd outside of a show. No one believed her to be particularly into the stuff she was covering on AOTS at first. Had she left her appeals to the channel's demographic on the network, she'd be just like any other tv personality. But, she sought the "18-35 males" G4 attracts and realized she can make a career off of being one of them. Tht required an effort and "deception" (for a lack of a better term that I for one don't care for. But that's me.

I can't account for what people do with their twitter accounts. I will say that as far as journalism is concerned, the uninformed are a hindrance to both parties. Not everyone has to be Robert E. Murrow but, do some research into what you're doing a piece for. Otherwise you get softball questions repeated over and over (from different sources) and we, as an audience, get no better understanding of the game in question. We basically have a glorified cutscene-ad combo. Unfortunately, this makes it seem as though the interviewer (eg a Munn type) look less than credible and makes them seem like they got their position out of aesthetic.

Again, I don't know twitter etiquette, but I'd imagine that whatever a "Cliffy-B type" (like you, I don't know if he's said anything) would be just as rude if said directly.

Actually Josteo, that could be arranged. We would need to know your areas of expertise first though. What are you well-versed in?

The only thing I disagree with you guys on is this. You shouldn't blame the female talent (Olivia Munn) for the lack of gaming knowledge. G4 like any network puts out a call or audition looking for a new young female host for a youth oriented entertainment show. During the auditions the last thing they are asking the young ladies if they know anything about video games. They are only looking for someone that can be front of a camera and look natural and look like they are having fun. I feel everyone that calls any of the female host on G4 phony should really blame the producers of the shows for only picking young ladies that they know. Know nothing about video games or video game cultural.

Other things you guys may not know. Is that some big name video game producers like a Cliff Bleszinski (not saying he does) hit on the female interviewers all the time and when they don't show them any attention. These big name producers get on the internet and start taking shots at former female interviewers. Saying things like "Aces, only a hundred more for - hook her up! She's the real deal and knows her gaming; she's not a faker like some others. " ~ twitter

It's not cool to me when people like Cliff takes shots at someone on twitter and they don't have the balls to add the "@" to that persons name. Well, that was my rant about that one little issue. Keep up the good work on the show.

P.S. Hey guys, I was wondering if I could call in or do a guest spot on your show. But then again you can always say "no".

Thanks
