If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Remember when no one expected there to be one blockbuster live-action G.I. Joe movie? Against all odds, and flying in the face of a good deal of logic, the motion picture wing of Hasbro toys was born and 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' hit theaters. Then came news of the sequel, though its shaky release schedule had many of us wondering whether 'G.I. Joe' would end up being a viable franchise. But it looks like the box office success of Jon Chu's 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation,' which was finally released last weekend after a delay of several months, has prompted the studio to put a third entry into motion. 'Retaliation' brings back many of the key characters from the first film while adding the likes of General Joe Colton (Bruce Willis) and Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson). The sequel took in over $41 million in its opening weekend, already bringing its worldwide gross to over $132 million. Variety's Andrew Stewart broke the news of a third Joe adventure via his Twitter account...
"Yo Joe! After a $132 mil opening for G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, Paramount said it will move forward with a third JOE."
Well, I guess it's confirmed, The Rock is an adrenaline shot for established franchises. Any series he enters after the release of its first film, experiences a pronounced upswing in both popularity and financial gains. He did the exact same thing for 'The Fast and the Furious' franchise; so much in fact that not only is his character returning for the next two movies in that series, but getting his own spin-off as well. All that being said, I actually thought 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' was better than 'Rise of Cobra,' in every regard, but the opinions of the other critics at the screening were highly mixed. It seemed those who really enjoyed the first movie found it superior to the sequel and those who didn't hold much affinity for 'Rise of Cobra' preferred 'Retaliation.' Personally, I think it was a step in the right direction, though far from a legitimately strong cinematic outing. I won't be able to determine how I feel about a third one until they figure out who is going to write and direct it. Though I would bet a year's supply of protein shakes that The Rock will be back.
What do you guys think? Are you excited for 'G.I. Joe 3?' Did you prefer 'Retaliation' or 'Rise of Cobra?'
