There is often a divide between studio executives and filmmakers; the age-old conflict between the artistic and the business side of movie making. That conflict has reared its ugly head yet again in regard to Guillermo del Toro's 'Pacific Rim.' The epic adventure film, pitting mech-suited humans against alien invaders, will now be converted to 3D. Del Toro had mentioned at this year's Comic-Con how resistant he was to 3D conversion on this film. However, it looks like the studio has put its foot down and a post-converted 3D 'Pacific Rim' is exactly what we'll get. 'Pacific Rim,' starring Idris Elba and Ron Perlman, is due out in theaters next July.
I feel terrible for del Toro, this is the second time in the last couple of years that he has been majorly screwed over by a studio. First, it was Universal pulling the plug on his 'At the Mountains of Madness,' and now they are forcing him to alter 'Pacific Rim.' The thing that irritates me about Warner Brothers' edict is that it is 100% motivated by profit. If you look at the track record of films that were post-converted to 3D as opposed to shot in such a way that accounts for the extra dimension, it's not encouraging. We get movies like 'Clash of the Titans,' also from Warner Brothers, in which the shoehorned 3D was so bad that parts of characters anatomy actually detached. Slapping a visual format onto a film after the fact does nothing to improve the aesthetic, and offers nothing except the chance to collect higher ticket prices. I'm not ardently against 3D altogether, but this is definitely its worst application. The solace I will take here is that there will still be theaters showing it in 2D.
What do you guys think? Could a post-converted 3D 'Pacific Rim' work? At what point should a studio not be allowed to have the final say on things like this?

Comment by Brad G on September 13, 2012 at 10:48pm It's the same thing with G.I. Joe: Retaliation... It was due out in June but got pushed back until next year to be converted into 3D. The reasoning? The corporate suits thought the reason why Battleship failed was because it wasn't in 3D. No, it failed because it sucked.
Comment by Mainstream12 on September 13, 2012 at 10:23pm As unnecessary as it is to post-convert 2D movies into 3D, I'm kind of tired of people continuing to bring up "Clash of the Titans" as a reason NOT to do it when since then (and before), SEVERAL movies have been post-converted. The fucking Avengers was post-converted, as was Titanic.
del Toro will be fine. He gets to use $200 million to make a movie he seems really passionate about, and he's getting "screwed over" by being forced to offer audiences the choice of seeing it in 2D or 3D? Gimme' a break. The day movies are only offered in 3D is the day I'll actually give a shit. Until then, see you in the 2D showing. Geez.
Comment by Gift of the Magi on September 13, 2012 at 9:13pm When will these studios understand: NOBODY LIKES 3D!!!!!
Comment by Deadman47 on September 13, 2012 at 8:58pm That's just being greedy.
Comment by SpikeGhost on September 13, 2012 at 7:54pm Ugh.
Oh yeah. This is Del Toro's Mass Effect rip-off. Shame that Warner Bros. is forcing him to do this.
Comment by Abraham_uk on September 13, 2012 at 5:33pm Is that Comander Shepard?

Comment by Face McShooty on September 13, 2012 at 3:40pm You could say it's the third time being screwed over by a studio in a few years after The Hobbit failed to get going when he was at helm due to Studio's money trouble.
Comment by VideaVice on September 13, 2012 at 3:09pm When Del Toro said he didn't want 3D it was mainly because he never thought the scenes he shot to be effective in another format than 2D. This gimmick wasn't a part of the original photography and most important thing it wasn't a part the action scenes creation process. So no extra artistic value added, just more more for WB.
