If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Last week it was revealed that Will Arnett was joining the cast of Jonathan Liebesman's 'Nina Turtles.' It was said he would be playing one of the male leads in the Michael Bay-produced reboot, but even now the specifics of his role have not been released. However, given that he wasn't playing one of the recently-cast turtles, and that the initial report stated in no uncertain terms that he wasn't playing Casey Jones, it realistically left only Shredder and Splinter. Well, strike one from that list. Danny Woodburn ('Seinfeld') has just been hired to play Splinter. Woodburn is a popular little person performer who has appeared in a number of TV shows and films, most recently 'Mirror Mirror' and 'Watchmen.' 'Ninja Turtles' is slated to be released June 6th, 2014.
This is an unexpected choice for Splinter, but not unwelcome. It's still unclear exactly how these characters will be constructed. It has been stated that the movie will utilize a mixture of live action and CGI, but which characters will be created with which? It would stand to reason that Splinter will be a computer-generated character, so my guess is Woodburn will be donning a motion capture suit for this gig. I would have thought they would have cast a Japanese actor, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the legacy of the performers who have brought Splinter to life on both the big and small screen over the years. Kevin Clash, creator of Elmo, portrayed him in the previous live-action films and even the iconic 80s cartoon used an American actor to voice the turtles' rodent sensei. I really enjoyed Woodburn as Big Figure in 'Watchmen,' but probably my favorite role of his was in 'Death to Smoochy.' I'm looking forward both to his portrayal and to seeing how Splinter is crafted for the movie.
What do you guys think? Are you happy Woodburn landed the gig? If not, who would you have chosen?
