New Writer Hired For 'Daredevil' Reboot

Remember that 'Daredevil' movie with Ben Affleck? It was not so bueno. However, in the wake of the continued box office draw of Marvel's many characters, Fox is planning a reboot of the blind lawyer-turned-vigilante. As of now, this reboot is set to be directed by David Slade ('30 Days of Night,' 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse'). Recently, the studio moved the project a step further toward reality by hiring newcomer David James Kelly to rewrite the existing script. Kelly will be taking over for Brad Kane ('Fringe') who was originally brought aboard to pen the script. Rumor has it that the new Daredevil movie will be based on the 'Born Again' story arc by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli in which the Kingpin discovers Daredevil's true identity. No word yet on when the new Daredevil film is due out.

I'm not going to argue that 2003's 'Daredevil' was good, mostly because my eyes are functioning, but I like the character quite a bit and would love to see a decent film adaptation. Knowing only the tiniest bit about the 'Born Again' storyline, I'm glad to see it will be the basis of the new film. However, and with no disrespect intended to Mr. Kelly, I can't help but feel like there's been a step down at the writing position here. Kelly has never been credited with a single screenplay, and yet he's being brought in to rewrite a script by 'Fringe's Brad Kane? It seems ill-advised at best. I also have mixed feelings about Slade as the director for this project. Sure, I had fun with '30 Days of Night,' and 'Hard Candy' is a staggeringly effective film, but the words 'The Twilight Saga' on his resume are enough to give pause to my enthusiasm for this reboot. Of course, once they announce who will be playing Matt Murdoch, the conversation of who's rewriting the reboot will be overshadowed.

What do you guys think? Does this screenwriter changeover concern you? Do you believe Slade, as director, can pull this off?

@Mike M.: You have it a BIT off.

Daredevil has enhanced senses AND radar.  He could read print by touch, had perfect balance and detect lies via heartbeat. He even had enhanced smell.

He was not trained by ninjas, but he was later trained by a man named Stick who added martial arts to his abilities later in his career. Originally, all he had was gymnastics and boxing (from his father). He's also a well trained street and stick fighter.

I just hope they don't do his origin story again like the Amazing Spider-Man. I'm just tired of reboots telling origin stories over and over again. We've seen the origin already, let's get on with a new story.

To reiterate what others have said on this article Slade has a pretty damn good resume to me. And that's including his work in Twilight. From a technical standpoint his movies have improved over the years regardless to the content he was working with imo. And as for Kelly, he could have just blown an interview out of the water with good ideas and a fresh look at the movie. I don't watch Fringe so I don't know what kind of loss Kane is to the script but wherever he seemed lacking the studio decided to give Kelly a chance. Hopefully he does well.

The Born Again storyline is one of my favorites in Daredevil and I think it truly defines his character. I prefer a darker approach complete with the drug use, violence, and adult situations but hopefully we'll get at least a PG-13 movie.

They better get their shit together. Ugh... With the bazillion the Avengers make s Marvel/Disney should buy back all those characters from Fox.

I wish Marvel was thinking ahead when they did these movies (DD and Spiderman) back then to try to integrate them into one Marvel universe instead of creating independent movies.  No doubt there was some studio pressure that limited their creative vision.  Now they just do reboots, when it could have been done right the first time.  It irks me.

This is great one of those cases were they can do good job or totally F up a great story, By screwing it up look what they did with the X-men graphic novel "God Loves, Man Kills", that was a great X-men story and they turned into movie that was, in my opinion, a total mess.  For those people who loved Batman this is story were that can get that reality that they crave so much from their comic book movies. And the big thing is, since the Avengers movie has been made, The Avengers can make an cameo in this film. This is seriously a dark comic, Matt's old love interested is a drugged out sex slave in Mexico. If they are going to do they have to go dark, I only see them f'ing it up though.

I have to say that a Daredevil movie still has potential. But seeing that the Kingpin is also a villian of Spider-Man there could be a some kind of cross promotion in the movies. Like Peter Parker could be walking down the street in the city when he stops at one of those stores with all the TV's pointing outward showing some breaking news. The breaking news are some highlights of an important ongoing trail of Wilson Fisk, with Matt Murdock trying to put behind bars. Just an idea.
