My Top 5 favorite movies of 2010 (as well as disappointments)

2010 was just an ok year for films, in my opinion. This summer was mediocre for it's blockbusters because I wasn't really excited for too many movies that were released this year. 2008 and 2009 had more hyped movies. It's ok though because I really did enjoy most of the films that were released during this year. Before I go into my top 5, I want to first mention a few movies that I were disappointed with.

Disappointing movies of 2010.

1. Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader

I loved the second movie of the series (Prince Caspian) which featured some of the best battle strategy scenes in a movie. I had hopes for this movie because there were still actors from the original cast going to be in this one such as Edmund, Lucy, and (King) Caspian. The whole element of them be ing at sea was kind of a turn off because they are basically away from Narnia. Also the major conflict in the movie is green mist? There originally was no conflict but the kids just showed up. I was bored and disappointed.

2. Iron Man 2

This movie was hyped but it was very shallow for me. Too many characters and too much focus on character development. What I wanted from this film was more and more suit action! There were a couple of cool scenes with it but not enough for me to have really appreciated it like I did for the first one.

3. Get Him to the Greek

I was really excited to see this movie because I really loved Forgetting Sarah Marshall but then after I watched this, I realized that it had no connection to that film at all except for the fact that Russell Brand was Aldous Snow. I did laugh out loud many times in this film but I noticed it was because it was simple, shallow humor. Then all of a sudden, the movie got really serious and I didn't like it anymore. I was really letdown overall by it.

4. The Last Airbender

I was very much aware that M. Night Shyamalan was directing this film. I also have never seen the original series so I knew I had nothing to compare this film to. My old roommate loved the original series and he kept getting me excited to watch this. The premise seemed awesome. After I watched this movie, I realized I had watched arguably the worst movie of the decade. The acting was bad, the action was forgettable, and the story was just dull. I had no true expectations for this movie and it was even worse than that.

5. Due Date

Robert Downey, Jr. and Zach Galifianakis? Sounds like a great duo! Came up short though. Had a lot of promise but just didn't deliver.

TOP 5 FAVORITE MOVIES OF 2010

5. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

I wasn't too optimistic in the beginning because it was a Michael Cera film and I thought "great another movie where he acts exactly the same." Then the movie began and I was blown away! I loved that it was basically just a giant video game. Great original action, great cast, and just a fun movie! The evil exes were awesome! Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, and even Ann from Arrested Development!! The boss fights with the exes were entertaining, I especially enjoyed the attention to detail in this film. For example, that scene where he was urinating, there was a meter that decreased. Just brilliant.

4. Kick Ass

A Superhero movie about a nerdy kid who wants to be a superhero. Enter a kid who likes to whack off to his english teacher and African tribal women. The movie started out a little rough but wow did it pick up! Aaron Johnson was a character you just wanted to root for throughout. I'm also happy that Nicholas Cage finally did a movie that was GOOD after doing a string of crappy movies. The girl who played Hit Girl was incredible. I loved the fact that a little girl didn't follow the rules of traditional 11 year olds and she kicked everyone's asses! Just fun to watch, especially the rescue scene with the strobe lights! The bad guy (played by Mark Strong) was just evil and it worked in this movie. Had a great balance of action, comedy, and even a hint of drama.

3. The Social Network

The Facebook movie.Great screenplay, great acting, great drama. I thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of this film. I was hooked in and addicted to it. The music was also great! I'm not normally a fan of courtroom dramas, but this movie was set up to where it wasn't really about that even though it was. I was a fan of every single actor in this film. There wasn't even a single moment where it dragged. I was totally caught off guard at the end because I didn't expect the ending to come like that even though the film was 2 hours long. This is exactly how you define a movie experience that you enjoy, you never want the movie to end. Even though this movie had no action, I could watch this over and over again because it's just that good!

2. Inception

This movie was a phenomenon. I loved the originality and the thought that was actually put into this. I love movies that make you think and this did exactly that. I watched this movie weeks after it came out originally so I have heard many things about it. Everyone said it was the most confusing movie ever and they just couldn't follow along. After I watched this movie, I could see why people thought that. I watched this film by myself and I'm glad i did because that way i could focus on the movie. This movie is like studying for a test because you have to pay attention to know what's really going on. Since I was able to focus on this, i was able to fully appreciate this film it was jaw droppingly incredible. Even though the different layers of dreams might seem excessive at first, it was just awesome for everything they had to do on this mission. Any movie with Leonardo DiCaprio is gold anyways and this movie is no different. When the movie ended, I just sat in silence and just kept thinking about what I just saw and I was stunned at this. That is what I like for movies to do.

1. How To Train Your Dragon

This can be like a surprise to most people but I will justify why this is my favorite movie of 2010. This movie totally surprised me because I thought this was going to be a typical Dreamworks movie. I remember I watched this movie at a midnight premiere with my roommate. We had never heard of this movie before so we just thought we'd kill time on a Thursday night and go watch it. We waited in line and this girl in front of us just goes "So have you guys been waiting for this movie for months like I have?" Then we just laughed at her. I was blown away with this film because it didn't need to try hard to impress me. The flying scenes in this movie were better than those in Avatar and this was a 3D movie! I really enjoyed the characters in this movie and liked the performances by Craig Ferguson and Gerrard Butler. Had it's comedic moments but this story was very well done. That's why I want to put this film as my number 1 favorite movie of 2010.
