My thoughts on some of the winners of SCREAM 2011
I did not see the actual show, but I listen when they haul out the nominees. Here are my thoughts on the results of some categories.
The Ultimate Scream winner- Deathly Hallows Part 2
This threw me off because they added tv shows which I find completely irrelevant. Pick ten tv shows and ten movies, why mix them up? I am happy to see one of the greatest conclusions of any cinematic series is gaining so much momentum before the real award season where I hope it will get several Oscar nods. But I loved Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Black Swan, and AMC's The Walking Dead. They all have an important place in my heart, but I have to say I would have preferred Aronofsky's movie to take home the prize.
Best Science Fiction film- Super 8
Having not seen Monsters, I agree that Super 8 deserved it. What a compelling, visually amazing movie that was. I enjoyed the hell out of it and if you didn't see it check it out twice. I will probably end up seeing it 3 times by the end of the year. Why the fuck is Transformers here? They did away with Twilight yet they still have this retarded dark horse running around.
Best Fantasy Movie- X Men First Class
Although the Potter finale would have been more suiting for this category I can dig it. If you didn't already know I am a huge fan of the X Men movies and this is by far the best.
Best Horror Movie- Let Me In
Haven't seen it and probably never will. Let The Right One In is my favorite vampire film and one of my favorite love stories. Not to disservice Matt Reeves' directing ability, but I doubt he equaled the original in the slightest. Of course I will say I Saw The Devil would have been a more appropriate choice. They did it right by nominating it, but giving the award to an American remake of a universally acclaimed swedish film? Something is awry with that. I think Ji Woon Kim's barbaric revenge/morality tale is one of the year's best films and I honestly have to say it is the best Korean revenge film I've ever seen. Sorry Old Boy, but your effect didn't last this long for me, still love you though!
Best Thriller- Limitless
Okay I liked Limitless enough to watch it twice and that great feeling it gave me the first time around did NOT fad one bit. But this categories' real winner had Hanna written all over it. So to see the award go to this movie was a bit of a letdown, but I praise Limitless for being fearlessly over the top and just having priceless moments of kick-ass.
Best TV Show- Game Of Thrones
I am a subscriber to HBO but that is usually my go to TV series place for Sopranos and Boardwalk. My brother loves this show. Yet it is based on the most acclaimed book that bored many to death. Tell me, is it worth checking out? But The Walking Dead, ho ho kowalski! I had no idea only six episodes could work their way into my heart the way Sopranos did, but this sure as hell made itself comfortable with my inner zombie lover.
Best Director- Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
Oh yes not one objection here. This is the movie of our generation and a truly great philosophical descent into utter insanity for any film lover. Edgar Wright is nice to see up there, but Black Swan meant more to me and the fact it was made is a bigger achievement by this crazy ass director who also made The Wrestler, another great character study.
Best Chase Scene- Pirates of the I DON'T GIVE A FUCK
It may be fine or maybe it just genuinely sucks as much as everyone has been saying, but if you saw Hanna you have to give the award to it for that incredible escape scene with the effective camera angles and strobe lights.
Fight Scene of the year- Scott Pilgrim vs the World
This is a no brainer, the final showdown between Voldemort and Harry was unforgettable and one of my favorite movie moments this year. Scott Pilgrim had some really kick ass fight scenes but Harry Potter holds my favor.
Best Scream Play- Harry Potter Finale
Definitely. They took it up to 11 on this one. I would have been equally satisfied if any of the other nominees for this one took it home though.
Best cameo- Hugh Jackman X Men First Class
I thought it was a funny joke at first but this is taking it way to far. No further comment on why. Buzz Aldrin for Transformers 3. If you can show up in a Transformers movie and still have my respect walking out your an alien or something. Well, he did go to space...
Best Villian- Ralph Fiennes
Cho Min-Sik is obviously the truly deserving winner. I loved Fiennes in the Potter finale, but Sik knocked it out of the park in I Saw The Devil. He also starred in Old boy and Lady Vengeance.
Best Indi film- Monsters
I'll check this movie out gladly. I haven't seen the other nominees except I Saw The Devil. My take on that has been made clear.
