If it's crap ... We'll tell you
This was one of my most anticipated movies of the year. I, of course, read the original graphic novel first, and I throughly enjoyed it. When I heard that the movie was a near-perfect adaptation, that made me all the more excited. So when I watched it yesterday, I was thinking, this movie nearly succeeded all expectations and gave me a few new suprises.
Postives...The animation throughout is amazing. Piticularly, I love the way the characters are lit when there in certain locations, since they actually look pretty tangible and dimmensional. The voice-work is incredible and very real. Benjamin McKenzie does a fantastic job as Batman, giving him a grim tone, but also, still sounding like a young Batman. Bryan Craston as James Gordon was also great. I'm glad that they kept most of the inner monologues from the comic in the movie, since what most of the characters thoughts gave the film the proper feel of mature film-noir. Some of the occassional CGI animation looked pretty good, piticularly in the car chase scenes. And I really liked how they did not shy away from most of the language they used.
Negatives...The film's running time feels too short to consider this a movie (an hour and four minutes). I know the comic itself was short, but they could've added in some more scene to extend the run time. And throughout the movie, they have moments when the date is put up. Look, I know that was done in the comic, but quite frankly, they should've kept that in the comic, because in the movie, the date popping up does get a tedious after awhile.
