With Hollywood still rummaging through our collective childhood toy box for inspiration, Warner Brothers is putting together a movie based on the popular Lego building blogs. The big screen version will be an animated 3D film directed by '21 Jump Street's Phil Lord and Chris Miller who also wrote the script. The central plot revolves around a regular Lego Joe who is mistaken for the great MasterBuilder and recruited to help take on a tyrant who seeks to glue the world together. The film has already attracted the voice talents of Chris Pratt and Will Arnett, and now it looks as though more vocal firepower has just been added. Morgan Freeman and Elizabeth Banks have signed on to the project, though their specific characters are at this point being kept under wraps. All we know is that Freeman's character will be named Vitruvius. 'Lego: The Piece of Resistance' has been set for a February 28th, 2014 release.
So yeah, they're making a Lego movie. At first glance, this seems like a terrible idea...despite the terrible pun title which I think is a great idea. However, I'm once again inclined to lend benefit of the doubt to Miller and Lord. What they were able to do with the children's book 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' is remarkable. That's of course in addition to their taking a forgotten 80's cop show and turning it into one of the best comedies of the year. There is also the mitigating factor that Lego has seen new life over the last few years in the form of movie-based video games. I have a feeling it is these games primary that are the catalyst for the studio's interest in making this film. In fact, Will Arnett's character is said to be the Batman of the Legoverse...a Lego Batman video game was released in 2008. As far as this bit of casting, Elizabeth Banks is supremely funny and I would listen to Morgan Freeman narrate the phone book. Two great pickups. We shall just have to wait and see how all the pieces of this project fit together.
What do you guys think? Could this Lego movie work with Lord and Miller? Are you interested in seeing it?

Comment by Zane Knutson on August 29, 2012 at 10:16pm If anyone can make a lego movie and make it funny, it's these guys. Along with how great Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs & 21 Jump Street were, Clone High might be the best animated TV series ever and it's a shame they never got the chance to make any more than the 1 season. So yeah, I think it's in good hands. Never thought a Lego movie would sound appealing...
I'm.... so confused.

Seriously?
A perfect murder
Comment by Ron Grijs on August 29, 2012 at 11:13am @Arsène Lupin the Third, I'm sure that if people stopped watching movies about children toys then they'd start looking for original ideas. However the top 20 of most profitable movies isn't filled with original material from the past but with toy movies such as Transformers. Most of the Harry Potter films are in there as well. Hollywood is a business and so they have no choice but to search for more children toys and books to bring to the big screen.

Comment by Sam Hill on August 28, 2012 at 7:05pm An original Lego film isn't a new thing, actually. Getting a theatrical release is a new one, though.
Has anyone heard of this film, Lego: The Adventures of Clutch Powers? It's a Lego flick I frequently see in DVD stores. It looks terrible.
