If it's crap ... We'll tell you

Now that we are a week into November, many of us have already begun shutting down 2012 and looking ahead to 2013. That's no slight to 'Skyfall,' 'The Hobbit,' and 'Django Unchained,' for which there is still much excitement and anticipation, but it's looking as if next year may be even more overloaded with geek properties than was 2012. One of the biggest releases of next year is Zack Snyder's foray into the Superman universe, 'Man of Steel.' One of the things that has really intrigued me about this film, and has me pumped for its arrival, is the fact that Michael Shannon ('Take Shelter,' 'Boardwalk Empire') will be playing the legendary villain General Zod. The enigmatic actor has been pretty shy about the role, not saying much about it in interviews up to this point. However, in this television interview, Shannon lets slip that he won't be uttering a very familiar piece of dialogue.

Big Morning Buzz Live, Michael Shannon
First of all, I have to commend Shannon on his composure during this obnoxious interview. Whose codpiece was bigger? Are you kidding me? So the new Zod won't be delivering that line that helped define the last one. On the one hand, it's disappointing, but it's really not a deal-breaker. At least, I don't think it is. I haven't read enough Superman to know if the line "kneel before Zod" was as indelible to the comics as it was 'Superman II.' To that end, I don't have the necessary knowledge base to say whether it even existed before Terence Stamp spouted it in Richard Donner's/Richard Lester's film. I'll need clarification on that from my well-read Spillios out there. When Michael Shannon was cast as Zod, my first reaction wasn't, "awesome, he'll get to say that line," it was "awesome, Michael Shannon is a phenomenal actor and will make an amazing Zod." There will be plenty for him to bring to the performance outside of a singular piece of dialogue.
What do you guys think? Is it an imperative that Zod command Kal-El to kneel? Does its absence in 'Man of Steel' in any way diminish your enthusiasm for the movie?

Why are you so negative already? There hasn't been enough material shown for me to judge yet. Also, Chris Nolan IS producing.

The difference is that "with great power comes great responsibility" is actually from the comics. Although I do agree that line should have been kept in Amazing Spiderman, "kneel before Zod" being left out of Man of Steel doesn't bother me. That just happend to be a repeated line for the character in Superman 2 that became popular. There just isn't that good of a reason for that line to be in this film (since it was never a character trait or anything like that).
Comment by John Lemus on November 8, 2012 at 11:04am Its like in The Amazing Spiderman when Uncle Ben did not say With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.
Comment by David on November 8, 2012 at 9:37am I think even if he just said "Kneel." I'd be fine with that. It's a shame he won't say it, but I get why they kept it out. It's one of those lines that, even if it was delivered all right, would be kind of hokey. The way the "Get your stinkin' paws off me you damn dirty ape" line in Rise of the Planet of the Apes was fine, but it got a chuckle during a critical scene, so it might have been counterproductive to the mood the director/writer was going for.

Comment by John Lemus on November 8, 2012 at 7:51am I can't shake the feeling that this movie is going suck either as much as superman returns or more. I don't like the costumes, Russell Crow Looks Awful, It has some scenes that look like they are emulating scenes in the new wolverine movie. I mean we have Hobo Superman and Hobo Wolverine. I know its all about the context but I am fairly sure it is going to be similar in both. And again both are going to have tome serious time line issues and huge gaping plot holes. I don't think Zack Snider can pull off doing a movie with out slow motion effects. Chris Nolan is only doing the story he is not producing or directing the movie. And we have James Mangold for Wolverine who has done movies like Walk the Line Knight and Day and 3:10 to Yuma the remake and Cate and Leopold. Again a guy who has no knowledge of the character or the comics.
And lastly we have Bryan Singer doing Days of Future Past which he will most likely anally rape.

Comment by Jordan Hoffman on November 8, 2012 at 4:10am I think homage isn't neccessarily a bad thing. A great scene in TDKR is Nolan's obvious reference to Batman Returns with Bruce and Selina at a Masquerade. That was an iconic scene, love or hate Batman Returns, and Nolan felt the need to tip his hat to a classic scene involving the same characters. If there's an important piece of Superman history that they feel would be nice to emulate from the original series, by all means!
But as for this? Nope, not dissappointed. Have NO idea what their take on the character is like, therefore I can't harbor any resentment at them not using a line that made the previous incarnation shine. It's more Terrance's thing, anyway. That's like having Heath Ledger say "wait 'till they get a load of me" or the next Joker saying "Why so serious?" it belongs to that version.
Comment by VideaVice on November 8, 2012 at 3:17am Supercop has nothing to do with the previous Batman movies just like I've said before TDK serie never tried to always remind you of those other Batman movies. That's probably what they're trying to do here with a new Superman where the line "Kneel before Zod" does not exist. Pretty good move IMO, no more nostalgia, we just move to something new.
