If it's crap ... We'll tell you
James Gunn's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' has been steadily piecing together its ensemble cast. Chris Pratt will be playing group leader Peter Quill (alias Star-Lord), wrestler Dave Bautista will take on Drax the Destroyer, and Zoe Saldana will be our cinematic Gamora. Not it looks like another slot on this roster of intergalactic superheroes has been filled. Michael Rooker has just been cast as Yondu in the upcoming Marvel filmic adaptation. Yondu is a hunter, a member of the Zatoan tribe from Centauri IV. Rooker has been acting for many years, appearing in countless films and television series, but he gained a resurgence in popularity as Merle Dixon on AMC's 'The Walking Dead.' 'Guardians of the Galaxy' is set to be released August 1st, 2014.
Michael Rooker? Now that's an inspired piece of casting. Rooker is a fantastic actor who has that impressive, formidable screen presence that will greatly benefit the character of Yondu. I mean consider once again Merle from 'The Walking Dead.' Merle is also a total badass hunter, it just so happens that his prey is the living dead. It's also not surprising that James Gunn cast Rooker in that he has been in both 'Slither' and 'Super.' It's always easier for a director to cast actors with whom they already have a working relationship, especially when they are making the transition to something as major as a blockbuster superhero movie. Of course, this is the same reason why I was hoping Nathan Fillion would end up as Star-Lord, but I have let that go...more or less. My favorite roles of Rooker's are those in 'Mallrats,' 'Tombstone,' and 'Repo! The Genetic Opera.'
What do you guys think? Are you excited that Rooker will be Yondu? If not, who would you have picked?
