Firstly, Ranger Mode. Many are up in arms that Ranger mode was made as a "Preorder Exclusive" when that isn't exactly the case. Like Dead Space 3 it's a first manufacturing run exclusive. This means that until Metro: Last Light has sold X number of copies and they have to manufacture more discs, all copies of the game will be Limed Edition. This means the only true preorder exclusives are the short ebook at Amazon, and the LMG(which makes no sense in an ammo rare environment) at Gamestop, and Walmart and Best Buy have nothing.
Now as for Ranger Mode being $5. Ranger Mode for 2033 wasn't free, at least not on consoles. It cost 240 MS points. Ranger mode also was 2 difficulties Ranger Easy which had everybody dealing 3x damage and dropping dead very quickly with ammo pickups being 1-5 bullets each. Ranger Hardcore is 1-2 bullet pickups and one shot kills more or less, also no HUD. It's a mode not a difficulty. In most games difficulty equals enemies being stronger and deadlier and you having a health handicap. A mode fundamentally changes core aspects of gameplay above and beyond tougher enemies and a health handicap. Normal editions of Last Light will still have the time honored tridifficulty options.
Given that until Deep Silver said as much I'd never heard that retailers had been strong arming developers into making preorder bonuses. Some may recall Prof Jeff dismissing the the rumor of the next generation of consoles being disc-less because retailers would simply refuse to sell a no disc console because their real sales numbers come from games. It's unfortunate to see this tactic being use to get preorder bonuses but that's the way it is. I suppose you could vote with your dollars but truth is some bonus are neat and at least with GameStop the most you HAVE to put down on a preorder is $5. I'm really not sure what Jason and Prof Jeff, or ANYONE'S issue with gamestops preorders is when it's just $5. You aren't dropping $65 in advance, you can if you want but you don't have to. And like I said some, not all but some of the preorder bonuses are pretty cool.
