Matt Reeves set to direct "Let the Right One In" remake

Photobucket

Even before Let the Right One In was released in cinemas, Cloverfield director Matt Reeves had signed to write and direct an English language remake for Overture Films and Hammer Films. Hammer Films acquired the remake rights at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival and Overture films plans to release the film in 2009. Alfredson has been reported as saying that he is not happy that the film is being remade, saying that "Remakes should be made of movies that aren’t very good, that gives you the chance to fix whatever has gone wrong" and expressing concern that the end result would be too mainstream. Lindqvist, in contrast, is excited that Reeves will be adapting the book from scratch rather than merely copying the original film and that the end result could be quite different.

FUCK this film already gets enough flack as being the "Swedish Twilight", and they are going to FUCK. IT. UP. EVEN. MORE.

figures...something good comes out on the film festival circuit that's a foreign film and instead of releasing it to a wider audience they're just gonna remake it....Damn it. They're gonna ruin this movie like they do to 90% of all original films remade in America.

What troubles me is that Carlyle is gonna be right about how they approach this property. Thanks to the success of Twilight, any hope of this remake not being turned into a teen romance just got fucked. Expect to see something very comparable to Twilight if this happens. On the bright side, the source material won't allow for it to suck half as much...I hope...

I don't understand why Hollywood needs to re-make foreign films.

Because the assholes who make up Hollywood are fresh out of ideas, so the next logical thing according to them is to capitalize on foreign films. Of course we see this more so in horror movies because we're seeing 'torture porn' on its last stand, and they pretty much all but exhausted the J-horror genre. So now we're not only in a period where that trend is dying out, but now we're at this age of vampires being cool again, all thanks to Twilight, and now we're going to get more star crossed lovers/vampire movies.

I don't understand why Hollywood needs to re-make foreign films. You lose the cultural nuances whenever you try to pull it off.
