Matt Reeves To Direct 'Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes'

Last week it was reported that Fox had prepared a short list of filmmakers to helm their followup to 2011's 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes.' Rupert Wyatt, who directed the surprise hit that returned the studio to one of their most celebrated franchises, announced recently that he would not be returning to direct the next installment. Well now it seems that short list has been narrowed down to one. Matt Reeves ('Cloverfield') has been tapped by Fox to take the reins for 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.' Though Reeves' deal is not finalized, it is said he beat out directing talent the likes of Guillermo del ToroJeff Nichols ('Take Shelter'), and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo ('28 Weeks Later').

I was supremely disappointed when Wyatt departed 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,' and in my perfect world he would still be in the director's chair. However, Matt Reeves is a filmmaker who has impressed me time and time again. Say what you want about 'Cloverfield,' but the fact is Reeves did a bang up job directing a highly conceptual found footage movie, and pulling convincing performances out of actors preforming against a great deal of CGI. I also thought he did a great job with the unenviable task of remaking 'Let The Right One In.' I love the Swedish original, and I'll admit I was as skeptical as anyone when I heard about the American remake. But Reeves found a way to stay true to the source material and still make the film his own. So he's proven he can balance live-action and computer-animated characters and play well in other people's sandboxes? Yeah, I'd say he's a good choice.

What do you guys think? Is Reeves a good hire for Fox? Who would you have selected?

let me in is only good when it's directly mimicing the original, which makes me think that the director had enough rspect for the original to know why he shouldn't have remade the original in the first place. not erribly impressed by reeve's other films.

He's probably a good director, but I think this is a mistake...we'll see...Hopefully I am wrong...I would have chosen Fresnadillo

Gotta be a better follow up than Let Me In...

I think he's a good choice. i think the guy who directed Chronicle (his name has slipped my mind atm) would also be a good fit

He's a good choice, but please please please don't fuck it up. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was so good, it deserves an equal, if not superior, sequel.

So no Cloverfield sequel? No time soon at least.
