If it's crap ... We'll tell you
This film is so overwhelming..and there's so much to say about it..that all I could do was just list pros and cons. Some of it makes sense..some of it won't. Some of the opinions i have here will probably change as i get an opportunity to analyze the movie further with another viewing (if time permits, which sadly probably wont be for a while). Over all i liked the movie , but I left wanting MORE! It's a good movie, with great potential but it could've used some ironing. Otherwise, i think it's a great start in introducing us to a new DC film universe....and eventually get us to that Justice League movie!..so here we go!
****Some SPOILERS BUT NOTHING MAJOR***
-Director Zack Snyder and Cinematographer Amir Mokri make beautiful music together!! I hope they work with each other again for the sequel. They have the look and feel for the new DC Nolan inspired universe down!! And this is definitely the aesthetic that other DC Hero movies should follow in order to get even remotely close to a justice league movie.
-The casting is fantastic with great performances.
-Henry Cavill and his chest hair killed it as Superman!! I was so relieved!! He's definitely the best actor to play Big BLUE since Christopher Reeves.
-Probably the best portrayal of a Superhero's Origin in film to since Spiderman 1
-The first half of the film is very fantastic, i found one moment in particular between Martha and a young Clark Kent, very touching. Brought me almost to tears.
-Realistic take on superman worked and frankly it's the best thing they could have done to modernize the character to todays Nolan obsessed audience. This movie got so real Superman even lets his Kryptonian chest hair pop out of his suite collar!! Yeah thats right.. chest hair!! Superman's keeping it ALL real unlike those waxed obsessed Avengers!
-Humanizing Superman, an alien from another planet with god like powers on earth was successfully done!
-the fight between Zod and Superman is pretty damn amazing!
-The effects are fabulous especially on Superman and that cape of his.
-I loved Faora-UI, (Zod's wife) she kicked ass and made up for a lack of strong female characters in this film..too bad she was a villain.
-You do get that money shot of him flying above the earth…i just wish Snyder could have let us soaked that moment in just little bit longer, i mean that moment is the reason i went to see this on IMAX! There were a lot of those moments that passed by too quickly, and maybe that's Snyder's response to fans complaining about the slow motion shots he's become notorious for. While i like the speed and power of this Superman..sometimes it would have been nice to temper that with moments like superman flying around the earth..moments where the audience can just take in the awesomeness and wonder that is Superman..after all ...he's practically a god.
-Lois Lane, great performance by AMY ADAMS..but her character had no real sense of purpose in the film. Lois had access into places no reporter in the real world would ever have been able to get into. Just because she knows the identity of superman, doesn't mean she has an all access pass to the pentagon, military helicopters, and a front row view of the battle between the military and the kryptonians. She's a civilian for god sakes!! She needs to get OUT of the way!! Not block the soldiers aim! It really felt very forced to me..and i know they were trying to incorporate her in the film in a way that didn't make her look like a damsel in distress..but I just didn't buy it. She's a human, a no nonsense reporter, and she belongs in the daily planet, not in a space ship shooting kryptonians with Jor-El. This particular movie would have been better off with less Lois Lane and more Zod. She'll have her time to shine in the sequel ;) Yes it's already in the works people! Oh and Warner Bros. If you want to have strong Female characters on screen, cut the the bullshit, and just make the damn WONDER WOMAN MOVIE ALREADY!!!
-The 2nd half needed to be tightened up! There's two parts to 2nd half of Man of Steel, 1) Superman saves earth from destruction and 2) Superman battles Zod. Snyder got too carried away with making these parts so massive so insane with special effects..that he took the luster out of the final battle with Zod, of which was freaking amazing!!!BUT unfortunately I was too numb from everything else i'd just seen to enjoy it. The massive destruction that occurs while Superman "saves" the earth (yeah that doesn't make sense does it) is so overwhelming that when it came to the battle with Zod, i honestly didn't care any more..I just wanted Superman to go help find survivors!!! Cause there had to have been casualties! Maybe Superman should have done that, before going straight for Zod.
-Not enough Zod! The actor Michael Shanning did a great job but I felt he wasn't given the opportunity to give us more!
-#1 CON Snyder, Nolan, Goyer forgot the one basic principle that makes Superman "SUPERMAN", his kryptonite!! and NO i don't mean the green shiney rock!! I mean his REAL kryptonite, which are "the people of earth". When it comes to them superman is selfless. NO ONE GETS LEFT BEHIND, AND NO ONE LIFE IS MORE VALUABLE THAN THE OTHER, NOTHING IS TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL FOR SUPERMAN'S TIME!! That's what makes Superman a symbol of HOPE, it's what makes him the Hero other Super Heroes look up to as the ideal. In Iron MAN 3, Tony Stark, saves a group of like 13 people from falling to their deaths!! Refusing to accept that he could only save just one, he saves them all! And that act of selflessness blew my breath away! So what does our new Superman do? well.. he apparently only has time to save Lois, and everyone else seems to not really matter much. And that's where I get PISSED OFF!!! because I've seen this before in the NOLANVERSE…yes NOLAN I'm talking to you and The DARK KNIGHT RISES!!! BATMAN RETIRING FROM CRIME FIGHTING AFTER THE DEATH OF RACHEL DAWES!! Really!? the death of his stupid girlfriend is all that it takes for BATMAN to stop crime fighting?! And WHAT?! PETTY THEFTS AND THUGS ARE TOO SMALL A PROBLEM FOR BATMAN TO CARE ABOUT?…IT'S GOTTA TAKE A BIG VILLAIN TO GET HIM OUT OF THE CAVE??!! UGH!!! BATMAN WOULD NEVER….um….where was I going with this? oh yeah..well that was a big character flaw…and DAMNIT NOLAN MAKES THE SAME MISTAKE AGAIN WITH SUPERMAN!!!And while people seemed to let it slide with Batman (especially after The Dark Knight)..With Superman this character flaw is extremely noticeable, and I'm not sure people will be as forgiving. Superman loves the people of EARTH not just Lois Lane! And he would do everything in his power to save as many lives as he possible could! I just can't accept the fact that Superman didn't even try to take the battle with Zod OUT OF THE CITY to like a desert or someplace where people wouldn't get hurt. At the very least Superman could have reacted a bit more towards the massive destruction and loss of life that was occurring while battling Zod and his forces. It just didn't feel right to me, and honestly, if Superman had just shown a bit more sympathy and selflessness towards others aside from Lois in the ending, i could have forgiven the other con's in my list.
-Too much destruction!! I was left wondering if he really saved earth!
-Too much doom and gloom, I get your making this a serious film, but little snippets of light humor throughout would've been nice.
-The abrupt cut and light heartedness of the ending scenes came too late for me and felt too RUSHED! They don't even explain how the city of Metropolis manages to get back on it's feet after the attack from Zod. I think after taking us through this overwhelming journey of collapsing buildings, alien explosions and utter despair ..Snyder owed us a little more in the last few scenes than what he gave us. Perhaps if he had taken the time to show a montage of Superman helping find survivors and rebuild the city… maybe even take the time to pay homage to Donner's Superman by having him save a cute kitten from the rubble of a collapsed building and handing it to the arms of little kid. THEN..THEN..then the actual ending moment when Clark shows up at the Daily Planet as a new reporter would have felt a lot more uplifting and hopeful to me.
