If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Slowly, ever so slowly, the big screen version of The Justice League moves forward. They still don't have a director, though we do know that screenwriting newbie Will Beall will be penning the script. Rumors have risen and fallen about whether Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be taking up the Batman mantle for the JLA movie, but one thing we do seem to know for sure is that Darkseid will be the villain. How would he work into the story, which story from the Justice League canon would they choose? We may have our answer today. It appears Beall will be working from Gerry Conway's 1980 "Justice League of America" run, which encompassed issues 183-185. The story revolved around Darkseid trying to place planet Apokolips in Earth's place with a death ray...guess who gathers to stop him? This story arc includes the likes of Doctor Fate, Powergirl, Mister Miracle, Geoforce, and the The Huntress.
I know there has been a considerable amount of unfavorable discussion about making Darkseid the villain in The Justice League movie, and how it's basically just DC trying to imitate 'The Avengers' utilization of Thanos, but I am very much looking forward to seeing how they bring this powerhouse of an antagonist to life. Now, we shouldn't be too quick to assume this will definitively be the plot, as this source does not state where they got this info, however I think it's worth playing devil's advocate. What I'm really interested in, should they go with this story run as a basis for the plot, is how many of the additional characters might turn up. I mean, they haven't even given individual movies to most of the recognizable members of the core team, but to then potentially draw from the iteration that featured Doctor Fate, Powergirl, Mister Miracle, et al? And I thought Martian Manhunter was going to be their tough sell to audiences. If this source material is confirmed, it'll be intriguing to see if they bring that entire version of the team into things or if they use it as a vehicle for the best known lineup; making changes in the process.
What do you guys think? Any fans of Conway's run out there? Would it make for a compelling Justice League film? Do you think they will go with the 1980 lineup including Powergirl, Geoforce, et al?
