Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Reps Denying He'll Appear As Batman In 'Justice League'

Who knows what to believe anymore, right? As soon as something looks like it's a sure thing, the rug can be so cruelly ripped out from under us. Such is the case with a story that was making the rounds a couple of days ago regarding who would play the new Batman in the mammoth superhero collaboration that is Warner Brothers' 'Justice League.' Less than 48hrs ago, one source seemed pretty confident, having talked to someone at WB, that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be playing the caped crusader in the JLA movie. TDKR SPOILER AHEAD! This would of course make sense considering where his John Blake character ends up at the end of 'The Dark Knight Rises.' It was said the first introduction of Gordon-Levitt as Batman would be a cameo in Zack Snyder's 'Man of Steel.' Now however, JGL's reps are vehemently denying that he will be playing Bats at all. 'Justice League' is scheduled to hit theaters in the summer of 2015.

I can't really make heads or tails of this whole situation. On the one hand, if the reps themselves deny a rumor, then that should be enough to ensure that rumor is thoroughly debunked, but why so vehemently deny a rumor that represents something so monumentally positive for their client? Methinks the publicist doth protest too much. It would make complete sense that JGL would be the JLA's Batman. Warner Brothers is still smitten with the Christopher Nolan universe incarnation of Batman and Gordon-Levitt was presented in the ending of 'TDKR' to be the one taking up the cowl. Not to mention the fact that we're on the doorstep of 2013 and very little is solidly in place for this enormous superhero undertaking set for 2015. The original report actually indicated that JGL would be playing Batman in a solo piece even before 'Justice League,' but that seems to have been debunked now as well. Ok then, industry peeps. If not Joseph Gordon-Levitt, then whom?! Let's get something concrete on paper, because right now I have serious doubts as to whether this thing is going to be able to effectively come together.

What do you guys think? Bummed JGL won't be Batman in 'Justice League?' Do we believe his reps denial? Do you still believe they'll be able to get this thing out by 2015?

Am i the only person that thought JGL was great In rises and was looking forward to seeing him as Batman Or Nightwing?

I never really bought the whole John Blake story in the TDKR movie. He seemed like a waste of space and he never really did anything worthwhile in the movie. I would prefer it if he didn't have his own movie.

@Razmere
(The Dark Knight Rises spoilers)
That's why TDKR's ending made no sense to you?

-Bruce left access to the technology to Lucius: John Blake contacts Fox, informs him that he's the new Batman, asks for access to the technology. Lucius is obviously weary to trust someone new so readily with that kind of technology; rich character dynamic.

-Bruce left his money to Alfred: Forces Blake to be more resourceful; tension, drama.

-Blake learning how to use the Bat-computer, etc.: Okay. Yeah, a bit of a learning curve.

-Mansion full of orphans: As far as I know, there are only two entrances to the Bat-Cave. One, the lift behind the secret door activated by a piano, and two, through the waterfall. I don't see any orphans wandering in by happenstance. And if they do, Blake will just have to murder them;...dramatic angle?

Anyway, sounds fine to me. Yeah, it would be different, but certainly feasible.

Think About This: What if in fact gordon-levitt did playbatman in the Justice League movie, although not necessarily as Batman or Bruce wayne at all, but Night Wing perhaps or Batman..maybe beyond? maybe even with Christian Bale perhaps as a mentor... That might pan out well, allowing a relationship  between Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne, important for JLA. It would ultimately result in one of the best collaboration of superhero movies, not that they have to be a continuation of another, but a combination of worlds. Synder's Superman from first trailers,look and feel a bit dark, more of a serious, with a  character driven story line which could preview the tone for the rest of the Justice league movies to come.... There's no denying Nolan's Batman Trilogy has changed superhero movies, and given critics and audiences alike an awareness that superhero movies too can have a chance among awards and great dramatic storytelling. If a justice league movie can be executed with the same quality as Nolan's trilogy and if my expectations for Man of Steel result in AWESOME (like i know they will) then the Justice League might kick the Avengers ass

Yeah, I'd be bummed if he WERE to appear. TDKR was bloody stupid in more places than one, including JGL's entire character.

Don't fuck with the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Joseph's a great actor, but you need someone stronger to carry both roles.

Comment by keh006 on November 28, 2012 at 11:02pm

Because he has no resources or skills to be Batman.

@Razmere

Why doesn't the ending to TDKR make sense?
