If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Now that 'Star Trek Into Darkness' has arrived in theaters, J.J. Abrams can focus all his attention on 'Star Wars: Episode VII.' While no official casting notice has gone out, original cast members Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher have been confirming to all who will listen that they will be returning. Additionally now, perennial scoop hounds Latino Review have uncovered a rumor that Jonathan Rhys Meyers may be in contention for a role in the film. Rhys Meyers gained a great deal of acclaim for his portrayal of Henry the VIII on the Showtime series 'The Tudors,' and has previously worked with Abrams in 'Mission: Impossible III.' There is no word on who Rhys Meyers might be playing, and it should again be noted that this is wholly unconfirmed at the moment. 'Star Wars: Episode VII' begins filming next year in the UK ahead of its 2015 release.
It's never easy to know how to react to something like this. On the one hand, this is an unconfirmed rumor so we should definitely not count any chickens before they have hatched. You know, if chickens happen to be your preferred method of counting. Still, it's always fun to play the hypothetical game, and who knows, this prospect may end up coming to fruition. It's impossible to speculate as to who Rhys Meyers might be playing because we still know next to nothing about the plot of 'Episode VII.' All we really have to go on is that it will take place after 'Return of the Jedi,' and that apparently (though again still not officially confirmed) the protagonist trio from the original trilogy will be somehow involved. I could totally see this rumor eventually being verified. Abrams is no stranger to using the same performers for multiple projects. I mean you look at someone like Greg Grunberg, who appears in damn near everything Abrams does, and it's clear he is a loyal collaborator. Actually, I'm surprised Grunberg wasn't the first non-franchise-veteran name to be generated by the rumor mill. I think Rhys Meyers is one of those guys who is quite talented as a performer, but who hasn't really had his big break into blockbuster stardom yet. Maybe this potential journey to a galaxy far far away will be that break.
What do you guys think? Could there be any legitimacy to this rumor? Any thoughts on who Rhys Meyers might play? What are your thoughts on him as an actor?
