Joaquin Phoenix Climbs Aboard 'Inherent Vice'

2012 was an amazing year for Joaquin Phoenix. His collaboration with director Paul Thomas Anderson in 'The Master' won him a great deal of acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Obviously not one to ignore a successful formula, Phoenix is in talks to re-team with Anderson for 'Inherent Vice.' The new film will be based on the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name. The story is described as equal parts noir and psychedelic comedy; centering on stoner private eye Doc Sportello whose estranged girlfriend gets him embroiled in a kidnapping plot. Anderson will adapt the novel for the screen in addition to directing. Phoenix replaces Robert Downey Jr., who was originally attached to the project. At the moment, 'Inherent Vice' does not have a start date.

I'm happy for Joaquin Phoenix. As much as the overall movie itself left me a little cold, a first in my experience with PT Anderson's work, I have to lend major props to Phoenix's recklessly powerful performance in 'The Master.' He threw himself headlong into that violently unstable character and the result was something fascinating and dangerous. I'm interested to see what another collaboration with Anderson will yield. All that said, I can't tell you how disappointed I am that Robert Downey, Jr. is no longer playing the lead here. This story sounds like a wonderfully weird film noir, and given how exceptional Downey proved to be in Shane Black's 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,' it would have been fantastic to see him tackle another off-the-wall crime story. However, if there is one performer who seems to exist on his own planet, it's Joaquin Phoenix. Therefore I'm sure he will do quite will with the forays into the psychedelic headspace of this character. Here's hoping this gets under way soon.

What do you guys think? Does this project interest you? Are you happy Phoenix is aboard or would you have preferred RDJ?

I would have really liked to have seen what kind of performance we could have gotten out of RDJ under Anderson's meticulous and wildly vivid vision. Still, Phoenix is always interesting to watch and if he can recreate what he did in The Master then to me it will be just as spectacular.

Happy Birthday Roboto

I'm not the biggest fan of  Paul Thomas Anderson's films, but I understand that his movies have a coherent plot and unique purpose behind them. Whether I dislike them or not they still have great attribute of film making and I can respect that. For Instance his film There Will Be Blood was not a great movie to me.The acting from Daniel Dey Lewis was phenomenal and so was from many other actors in that movie. However I still think if you just read an actual history book  about guys like John D. Rockefeller,Cornelius Vanderbilt,Andrew Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan that would tell you plot of There Will Be Blood. Or watch the History Channel's eight-hour, four-part miniseries docudrama "The Men Who Built America". But I still would not compare Paul Thomas Anderson to the likes of M.Knight Shyamalan that's just damn wrong!!!!!!!!!!

Hey man you didn't offend me. If I like something I like it period. No one can take that from me. I accept that you just have a different opinion than mine.

However on the topic of Christopher Nolan being compared to  M.Knight Shyamalan, George Lucas, or even Michael bay's films I think is absurd. Opinionated but absurd. Nolan at least tries to make a film that is coherent or a movie with an actual plot. Now whether you consider that the plot great is up to you as the individual person. Whereas M.Knight Shyamalan hasn't made a good film since Signs and even that wasn't nearly as good as his best film the Sixth Sense. He tends to have script in mind with a good concept but ultimately it gets muddled in through him trying to lecture the audience. At least that's how I feel. His movie The Village, the Lady in the Water, and The Happening all had a good concept to them but turned out to be pieces of shit films. On the other hand George Lucas has really only had two bad Star Wars movie. Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. Revenge of the Sith was the only decent one out of the prequels and that's not saying a lot for that film. But most of his movies besides Kingdom Crystal Skull and Red Tails which I found thoroughly enjoying because Grandpa was a black fighter pilot in WWII both decent enjoyable. Even though they came up short of what they could have been. Nevertheless he has gotten a bad rap from fans more so then actual film critics. Now Michael Bay I don't really hate him like everyone else does. Most of his movie to me are guilty pleasures like Bad Boys 1 and 2 and the first Transformers. Yes there dumb movie but they get the job done when it comes to ridiculous entertainment.

Above all else guys I mean no offense to any Chris Nolan fan as I only speak for myself.

That said just because something is popular that doesn't make it good, Michael bay's films are trash but they've made a lot of money! I think Nolan's films average out to be good but not excellent and I think everyone is overrating them.

That's a bit of a harsh comparison Happy Birthday Roboto, the filmography of Nolan is pretty highly rated, much more so than Shyamalan's. I understand that's your opinion, but if you look at the reception of his films then you'd see that most if not all were of fairly high acclaim:

Following: 7.6/10 (imdb) 79% (RottenTomatoes.com)
Memento: 8.6/10. 92%. 80/100 (metacritic)
Insomnia: 7.2/10. 93%. 78/100
Batman Begins: 8.3/10. 85%. 70/100
The Prestige: 8.5/10. 76%. 66/100
The Dark Knight: 9.0/10. 94%. 82/100.
Inception: 8.8/10. 86%. 74/100
The Dark Knight Rises: 8.7/10. 87%. 78/100

I don't think I need to go through Shyamalan's ratings to know they'd all be quite a bit low in comparison with the exception of The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, but for the record, in chronological order the imdb ratings for his films are 5, 5.9, 8.2 (The Sixth Sense), 7.2 (Unbreakable), 6.7, 6.5, 5.7, 5.1, 4.5.

In fact I don't think anyone out there will say that Shyamalan is a good director. Only 2 of his films were well received with the remainder on the cusp of average and most below average.

@Gregory Alford
I see him as an M. Knight Shyamalan because I think he's made a few good movies and a few not so good ones and many years from now people will say that he wasn't as good as everyone said he was at the time, but that's just my opinion.

Happy Birthday Roboto and  Witherspoonfan

How is Nolan anywhere like M.Knight Shyamalan and George Lucas? He'e only had one movie that has divided the fans of the The Dark Knight series. That's not technically a quote on quote bad directing :/

Witherspoonfan, I think Nolan is more like the new M. Knight Shyamalan!
