If it's crap ... We'll tell you
The American Film Market is still going on in Santa Monica, California. The event has but one purpose: to get movie deals made. Many of the films presented at AFM won't get picked up, just by sheer law of averages, but one that has some legs to it is a film called 'Caught in Flight.' The film is a biopic about the late Princess Diana and her controversial love affair. The film is set to star Jessica Chastain ('Take Shelter,' 'The Help') as the tragic Princess of Wales with Oliver Hirschbiegel ('Downfall,' 'The Invasion') to direct. The film will be produced by British outlet Ecosse with pre-production slated to begin in March of next year.
To my knowledge, this would be the first big screen biopic about Diana, one of the most captivating historical figures in recent memory. Jessica Chastain has quickly become one of the most respected actresses in Hollywood by turning in fantastic performances in a total of seven films this year alone! She may not look exactly like Princess Diana, but given the wizardry of modern makeup effects, that doesn't present a huge problem. Besides, I would much rather have a skilled actress in that role than a dull, uninteresting actress who happens to look just like Diana. The other reason to be excited about this project is director Oliver Hirschbiegel. If your only exposure to 2004's 'Downfall' is that Internet meme wherein Hitler is pissed off, you really should watch the film itself. Hirschbiegal has proven his adeptness at crafting fascinating historical biopics and it would be amazing to see what he could do with Diana's story.
