If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Just when you thought there wasn't quite enough machismo in 'The Fast and the Furious' franchise, it appears another box office action star is coming aboard. During a recent interview, Michelle Rodriguez, who plays Letty in the film series, confirmed that Jason Statham had been recruited for 'Fast & Furious 7.' Statham has become an international action star ever since he headlined 'The Transporter' franchise. He is also a fixture of the ever-expanding 'Expendables' series. It is rumored that Statham will play Ian Shaw, the brother of Luke Evans' villainous character in 'Fast & Furious 6,' but that is far from confirmed at this point. Director James Wan will be taking over for franchise veteran Justin Lin in part seven.
This is great news, though it may not seem like it on the surface. I'm not going to pretend that every single Statham action vehicle has been fantastic. Point of fact, he's made quite a few major stinkers. But he is a a great action frontman and has already played a badass wheel man in both 'The Transporter' films and 'The Italian Job.' Plus, his hiring only further proves the amusing direction in which this franchise is heading. If 'Fast Five' and the trailer for 'Fast & Furious 6' are any indication, the series has embraced its absurd conceit and longevity, and has begun, near literally, throwing everything it can think of at audiences with a sly smile and a self-effacing nod. Tanks, cargo planes, and The Rock? Come on. Jason Statham is basically the kitchen sink, the one thing they haven't tossed at us yet. I really like director James Wan, and I'm interested to see what he does with the ever-growing list of items in this franchise toy box.
What do you guys think? Are you excited that Statham is coming aboard? Who else might the franchise throw at us in the next installment?
