James Gunn Confirmed For 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'

Last month it was reported that Marvel was in talks with James Gunn ('Super,' 'Slither') to helm their big screen adaptation of 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' This set the geek communities abuzz as it was somewhat of a left field choice for the studio. The rumor went officially unconfirmed since then, although last week Joss Whedon made comments about being a fan of Gunn's take on the material, which seemed a pretty solid indication that he was indeed directing. Now, finally, Gunn himself has confirmed the rumors. He posted the following on Facebook...

"For a month or so there’s been a lot of Internet speculation about my involvement with Marvel’s 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' Until now I haven’t said anything, because I’m trying to be less expulsive about this project than I am about the rest of my life. But last night I got the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to let you all know that, yes, indeed, I am rewriting and directing 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics, AND raccoons, this is the movie I’ve been waiting to make since I was nine years old."

I am really happy to hear this. James Gunn is such a fascinating filmmaker and the thought of him getting a break like this warms that black void in my chest where my heart should be. While my lack of knowledge of the source material renders me incapable of stating exactly what from Gunn's background makes him perfect for 'Guardians,' I still think his ability to mix dark comedy with superhero tropes in 'Super' will serve him well here. We often run the risk of deifying Joss Whedon here on the site, but it can't be denied that 'The Avengers' was a phenomenal success on every level for Marvel. Therefore, the fact that Gunn has Joss' blessing is no small boost. Here again, Marvel demonstrates its propensity toward riskier director choices, something that has paid off for them nearly every time.

What do you guys think? What can we expect from a James Gunn 'Guardians?' Do you feel he's the right choice? Seriously, can we get Nathan Fillion in this now?

As long as he doesn't make Rocket Raccoon a racial stereotype (remember the twins in Transformers 2) then yeah I think the movie will do fine. If people can buy into the whole Avengers story (which I think could have been a little better) then folks would get a kick out of this.

He's the director this movie deserves, but not the one it needs right now... Oh wait, wrong franchise... and wrong universe.

ITS OFFICIAL Marvel Film Studios is the only studio in Hollywood that gets their fans, I mean really gets their fans completely. I try and shy away from rabid fanboyism but every time marvel studio makes a choice of director or writer (usually the director they pick does a bit of both) I just fall more in love with them. Now one can argue how much of a chance one can actually take with a big budget super hero movie (which is about as safe a choice a studio can make beside adapting a popular YA book series) but they really do take chances and that is rare in a system so concerned with the bottom line and following formula.

While I know almost nothing about Guardians of the Galaxy (outside of the episode of Avengers:EMH featuring them) and I only saw Gunn's film "Super", I'm pretty excited about this. If you look at the catalogue of directors for Phase 1, almost all of them were unpredictable choices that in the end worked.

Plus I'm hoping that this movie has the same effect "Thor" had on me, as I never knew much about the character or cared all that much. But after watching it, I really got interested in the Thor mythos. So hopefully I'll experience the same thing with Guardians.
