Is Michael Bay the worst director to ever make a movie or do people misjudge him somewhat?

Now before people go on and tell me that "Of course Bay is a shitty director, why would I think twice about it?" I would like to emphasize that Bay is not that worse than M Night. Shymalan or Owe Boll. He is self aware how people view his movies and understands the criticism, the problem some people don't get is he doesn't wanna stop making these blockbusters. he loves making them. You can see in his films like Bad Boys or The Rock or even the first Transformers, he has a sense of what audience want in a summer blockbuster.

He can deliver a blockbuster if he is under some control. Transformers 2 and Pearl Harbor are prime examples of how the producers didn't have control on the project and Bay went over the edge. Now with Transformers 3 it seems some people are mixed and understandably so. It has all the crappy humor and unnecessary characters that are synonymous to a Bay film and then finishes it off with repetitive spectacle well-done action set pieces that dazzles the audience. So in a way, Bay is doing something right; he makes great action movies for the sake of entertainment. I'm not saying that automatically makes hima  great director but if we had a world of just Steven Spielbergs or David Finchers or Christopher Nolans, the movies released would get pretty boring without some new flare or style.

Not all of Bays stuff are the worse, we can admit that. I personally like most of Bay's stuff. Everything except for Transformers 2 and Pearl Harbor, I really like. He makes movies that for me I can enjoy without having to worry about any drama or story, just mindless action, is that such a bad thing? I am a man of simple pleasures. I like dramas, I like comedies and I like action movies. Is it a crime to say I enjoy Bad Boys? Or I love The Rock? can't I love Saving Private Ryan and Armageddon knowing fully aware of all the problems it has? Its a free country people, Jeesh. Some of us Bay fans get a lot of shit for just saying "we like some of his stuff being fully aware of the problems they have" Yet, If I say I love J.J. Abram's movies, people won't comment cause everyone unanimously likes his stuff but we'll be referred to as being "stupid" for liking Bays stuff when we know all the flaws. I guess people just jump on the bandwagon for hating Bay.

Bay knows how to photograph action beautifully and grandiosely. I mean I would like to think most of his movies make money cause people enjoy them. The average movie goer may not care for a story or characters and want to be entertained and hey, they have that right so what right do we have to deem them "stupid" for doing so? We've all liked some stupid shit or have our own "guilty pleasures" that we know is bad but can't resist. So where would Bay fall in the spectrum of film-makers? He is the sweet candy we love to eat but when we go for a cavity check-up, we feel like shit for doing so, but one way or another, we will go back and enjoy that candy. In other words, Bays not that bad. We acknowledge how bad he is yet we'll give him credit where credit is due.

@The Dubya I find his "SPLOSIONS" to be the more enjoyable. i mean Compare him to other actions directors and find the difference like John Woo or Zack Snyder, they all have their own style of doing action that brings some uniqueness to action movies, really compare the action of their movies to each other and I think you will see a difference. And really, without Bays sensibilities, most of those movies would not have been successful. Like i said, he has his own unique style he brings to the table that no other director has. And I think Bay knows already he cant write a script good the way he handles his characters. To me Bay is a representation of Safe Blockbusters that while SOMETIMES shallow, are the definition of summer entertainment that a audience can appreciate. He may be overhyped but I don't think Overrated. But thanks for your input.

He may not be the worst, but he's still overrated as hell. I fail to see how his "SPLOSIONS!" are any different than any other "SPOLISIONS!" from any other generic action movie.

I'll be the first to admit, he's not dumb. He chooses his projects pretty carefully, i.e. projects that practically already have a built-in full theater audience ready and waiting to eat up. Get you megastars like Will Smith and Martin Lawerence or an all-star cast like with Armageddon or an enormously popular franchise like Transformers, and his job his 3/4 done. All he needs to do is point the camera at stuff and make it go KABOOM. So that way, people can let go off his ENORMOUS douchebag ego that he unapolegetically jizzes all over his movies because of the factors people were already more than willing to gobble up. Michael Bay movies have been successful in spite of him, not because of him, except maybe The Rock.

People were making the same comparisons to Bay with Zack Snyder (one of the guys I DO find a better action director than Bay). People were saying "Well his films may not be the 'smartest', but he sure does make em look gooooood!" and people let him slide. Until he wrote Sucker Punch....then he got exposed BIG TIME.

And it's only a matter of time before the same thing happens to good ol Mike if he so choose to follow the same path. He's had the "brand recognition" safety net under him his entire movie career, so unless he really has some brilliant talent that he's not exposing to us yet, he better not budge if he plans on continuing once the whole Transformers craze is over.

Michael Bay is the perfect representation of the Hollywood business mold; shallow, overhyped, overrated, and safe.
