If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Ladies and gentlemen, freaks and geeks, nerds and dorks, homies, pimps, comrades, whatever the fuck you want to call yourself….last year, the major motion picture of the year came into the form of The Avengers and that movie pretty much rocked the year of 2012 with Marvel holding their ground as the premiere studio for comic book movies and the way they ended Phase 1 with a bang was very impressive to say the least and now that Phase 2 has started with the return of the first hero to be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe…….IRON MAN in his second sequel, IRON MAN 3!!!!
Marvel's "Iron Man 3" pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
Well, in case you have been living under a rock, this installment was directed by Shane Black, who wrote and directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which also starred RDJ and this is the first Iron Man movie to be released in the Marvel Studios label under Walt Disney Pictures while Paramount Pictures (the original distributor) is still associated with the movie, although they won’t be on the next Marvel movies. There is a lot of anticipation riding this ever since the end of Avengers and also how people weren’t that pleased with the last Iron Man sequel. I, myself, did kind of like the second one but it has its share of problems (very glaring problems) but upon hearing from people who saw it already (either those outside the US or in the US but saw it on earlier screenings) said that the movie does surpass the last one with some major exceptions. However, for me, I thought this was a great movie, maybe not one as high of a caliber to The Avengers but a solid good movie.
I have noticed one thing in the film that many people will bitch about and it was that twist in the middle about a certain character and so many people are really pissed about that and if you know what character I’m talking about, no spoilers, you cretins!!!! But for me, I really don’t give a shit, and most people who don’t read the comic books but follow the Marvel Movies can look past that and laugh it off just like that. This issue may remain divisive among fans of both the movies and the comic books.
However, the performances for the movie were on par with previous movies, like Robert Downey Jr.….many people already said this about his performance as Iron Man, the man is great in his role and no other person can ever fill his shoes if they decide to reboot it. (But, seriously, don’t reboot Iron Man). The roles of Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) & James “Rhodey” Rhodes (aka War Machine or Iron Patriot – Don Cheadle) has expanded for them to showcase their key elements in the movie and be more than just characters to sit on the side and not deliver on the action and believe it, they have deliver on the action!!! Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian does sort of remind me of Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2, but less comedic but more of a slime ball asshole that’s more suited for a movie like this. And Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin was a bit jarring as you first feel threatened by him but near the middle, you start to not care and like I said, I’m not mentioning any spoilers.
I like that the tone of the movie gets get dark but it isn’t overly pretentiously dark (like The Amazing Spider-Man & The Dark Knight Rises) and that’s what good about the Marvel movies. They can enter into dark territory with the character development and realizations about them but they never forget that they got a lighter side of themselves that never feels too inappropriate to forgo to. I also like that it focuses on more of the character of Tony Stark rather than just Iron Man doing all types of everything, much like on TDKR, they focused more on Bruce Wayne than Batman but like I said, totally different from the Iron Man movies.
FINAL VERDICT: Iron Man 3 is the superior successor to the last one in regards of character development and involvement, great humor, and satisfying action sequences. However, if you expect anything Avengers-like, then you going to have to lower your expectations by a tad. It’s a good start to enter Phase 2 of the MCU with, eventually leading to Thor: The Dark World and overall, it’s another great movie for the summer.
So, the grade for Iron Man 3 is……
9/10 – Full Price
And until then, this is MAK2.0 aka The Hybrid, bringing all the parts in one Iron Man.
